Marseille Imposes Curfew for Minors Following Nationwide Unrest
France's second-largest city instituted nighttime restrictions for unaccompanied minors as authorities respond to widespread civil unrest and vandalism.
Marseille has implemented a targeted nighttime curfew for unaccompanied minors as French authorities continue to grapple with severe civil unrest, vandalism, and looting that erupted during nationwide demonstrations. The restriction, effective from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. in specific sectors near commercial centers, runs from Tuesday through Friday.
The measure in Marseille is part of a broader wave of emergency actions taken across several French cities, including Paris, Lyon, Nice, Bordeaux, and Toulouse. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu noted that targeted curfews across the country helped maintain calm during recent nights, following some of the most destructive rioting France has seen in years.
The nationwide disturbances began during protests over living costs and conditions in schools, leading to widespread clashes with police, burned vehicles, and attacks on public buildings. Officials report that at least 2,400 people have been arrested nationwide since the unrest started, with hundreds already facing prosecution and immediate prison sentences for property crimes and looting.
In response to the chaos, the French government has planned a massive security mobilization for upcoming weekend protests. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced that soldiers from the Sentinelle anti-terrorism operation will guard sensitive sites to free up police officers and gendarmes for crowd control ahead of further demonstrations called by student unions and other groups.
Meanwhile, the unrest has also impacted sports schedules. Olympique Marseille recently secured a 5-2 victory against Angers in Ligue 1 play before shifting focus to European competition, where the club prepares for an upcoming UEFA Europa League fixture against Sturm Graz.
As political leaders and law enforcement prepare for additional demonstrations, the National Assembly has launched an official inquiry into the violence and the policing strategy deployed on October 17. Parliamentary investigators plan to examine the handling of public order and release their findings by the end of the year.
