Massive Fire Destroys Carpentry Shop and Residence in Nesselwang, Germany
More than 100 firefighters responded to the blaze, which caused extensive property damage.
A massive commercial and residential fire swept through the Bavarian town of Nesselwang on Sunday afternoon, October 18, 2026, completely destroying a local carpentry workshop, a warehouse, and an attached residential building. More than 100 emergency personnel from several area fire departments were dispatched to the Obere Wank West commercial zone in the Ostallgäu district to battle the inferno, which generated thick plumes of dark smoke visible from miles away.
The emergency began when a witness spotted dense smoke pouring from the commercial property and, upon closer inspection, discovered flames already spreading through the structure. Accounts differ slightly regarding the exact starting point of the blaze: initial reports indicated that the flames may have originated on the upper floor of the residential building adjoining the warehouse, whereas other accounts described the fire as initially confined to the warehouse before rapidly engulfing the carpentry shop and the apartments above it. The swift movement of the flames soon resulted in a full-scale structure fire.
Firefighters from Nesselwang, Oy, Weißbach, Röfleuten, and Berg arrived rapidly to establish containment lines and launch a concentrated extinguishing effort. While combating the core of the fire, emergency crews focused critical resources on shielding surrounding infrastructure. Their defensive efforts successfully kept the advancing flames from jumping to an adjacent facility operated by a neighboring metalworking company, preventing even broader industrial damage in the commercial zone.
As the fire intensified, an expansive and dark smoke cloud rose over the scene, prompting significant health and safety measures. The smoke was prominent enough to be seen by motorists traveling along the nearby A7 highway. Prevailing weather conditions exacerbated the hazard by pressing the smoke into lower elevations and driving it directly toward populated areas of Nesselwang. In response, officials triggered alerts through regional warning apps via the Integrated Dispatch Center Allgäu, urging community residents to remain indoors with their doors and windows shut tight.
Emergency crews managed to bring the main body of the blaze under control within approximately two hours. Nevertheless, the severity of the fire required extensive overhaul and secondary extinguishing operations. Firefighters remained deployed at the charred premises throughout the evening and well into the night to extinguish deep-seated embers and eliminate any residual hotspots buried beneath the collapsed building materials.
Officials confirmed that, despite the complete destruction of the carpentry business and the living quarters, no injuries were sustained by residents or emergency responders. The financial impact, however, is substantial. Discrepancies remain regarding the precise monetary assessment: initial notifications cited property damage reaching into the high six-figure range, whereas subsequent police evaluations estimated the total loss to exceed one million euros.
The cause behind the outbreak remains unknown. Initial investigations at the scene were undertaken by officers from the Füssen police department alongside the criminal investigation duty service. Reports also showed minor inconsistencies regarding future oversight of the case, with some accounts stating the Memmingen criminal police had assumed responsibility for the investigation, while others attributed the ongoing inquiry to the criminal police in Kempten.
