Matisse Thybulle Wears No. 4 as Lakers Rout Warriors in Opener
Matisse Thybulle debuted his preferred jersey number in Los Angeles as the Lakers defeated the Golden State Warriors 127-105.
Matisse Thybulle debuted a new chapter with the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night, taking to the court in the No. 4 jersey previously worn by Dalton Knecht. Following Knecht's release earlier in the week, Thybulle seized the opportunity to wear the number that has been synonymous with his basketball career since high school. When Thybulle originally joined the team over the summer, he wore No. 26 as a mathematical nod to his past numbers, but he has now returned to the single digit he wore at Eastside Catholic School and the University of Washington.
Thybulle's transition to his preferred number coincided with the Lakers' dominant 127-105 victory over the Golden State Warriors at Crypto.com Arena. Under head coach J.J. Redick, Thybulle slotted directly into the starting lineup on the wing alongside Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, Walker Kessler, and Ziaire Williams. The new-look Lakers rotation leaned on Thybulle's defensive presence while several players remained sidelined due to injuries.
The Los Angeles backcourt and rotation faced notable absences during the season opener. Cameron Carr missed the contest due to a right oblique strain, while second-year forward Adou Thiero was unavailable because of a left knee effusion and swelling. Point guard Collin Sexton also sat out as he continues to recover from a right soleus strain after signing with the franchise over the summer.
On the court, the night belonged to Luka Doncic in his official debut as the undisputed leader of the franchise following LeBron James' departure to the Philadelphia 76ers. Doncic orchestrated the offense brilliantly, finishing with 28 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. He was heavily complemented by newcomer Walker Kessler, who put on a historic shooting display with 26 points on a perfect 12-for-12 from the field, alongside nine rebounds and two blocks.
The game featured intense moments, most notably a verbal altercation between Doncic and Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg during the second quarter. After being whistled for a foul following physical play, Lendeborg exchanged words with the Lakers superstar, earning a technical foul. Doncic punctuated the half by sinking a dramatic half-court three-pointer and pointing at Lendeborg, helping stake Los Angeles to a 66-52 halftime lead.
Lendeborg expressed frustration after the game regarding Doncic's frequent complaints to officials, telling reporters that he lost respect for the veteran guard despite growing up watching his highlights. Conversely, Warriors star Stephen Curry carried his team early with 16 points in the first eight minutes, finishing the night with 23 points, though Golden State ultimately faded as the Lakers pulled away with a massive 36-16 third-quarter run.
With the opening victory in the books, the Lakers prepare for their next matchup in the first Los Angeles derby of the season against the Clippers. Meanwhile, Thybulle settles into his familiar No. 4 uniform, hoping to solidify a steady role in Redick's secondary and starting rotations as the rigorous regular-season schedule continues.
