Meta Issues New Shares for Mark Zuckerberg to Avoid Billionaire Tax Move
The Facebook founder secured a massive stock package to stay in California as the company seeks to keep its leader close during the artificial intelligence race.
Meta has moved to issue approximately 342 million new shares to co-founder and Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg following a dispute over a proposed billionaire tax in California. State voters are scheduled to vote on November 3 on a one-time five percent billionaire tax. With Zuckerberg holding an estimated fortune of 247 billion dollars, the proposed levy would have resulted in an extra tax bill of over twelve billion dollars.
To pay the potential tax obligation, Zuckerberg would have been forced to sell existing shares and consequently surrender voting rights, diminishing his control over the tech giant. Reports indicated that Zuckerberg threatened to relocate out of California by mid-October and put his Palo Alto mansion up for sale if a solution was not reached. However, a special committee at Meta determined that the CEO's physical presence was critical, particularly to avoid management distance issues experienced during the pandemic and to maintain momentum in the ongoing artificial intelligence race.
The resolution involves creating new shares without voting rights distributed proportionally to all shareholders, allowing them to sell shares without giving up voting power. Under the arrangement, Zuckerberg is initially permitted to sell only 20 percent of his new holdings to cover tax liabilities while preserving his voting dominance. In exchange, he has committed to residing in California, or the future home state of Meta headquarters, for eight years while leading the company full-time. Financial analysts note that the transaction does not increase his total wealth, as the issuance dilutes the value of the older shares.
In other corporate and market news, luxury stock Hermes experienced a significant drop, falling eight percent to 1,248 euros at the end of the EuroStoxx 50 index. The decline marks a difficult stretch for the company, pushing its year-to-date losses past 40 percent and heading toward its weakest year in stock market history since trading began in 1993. Analysts from RBC and Jefferies noted that the company missed recent expectations amid ongoing challenges in the Chinese market, though performance in America and Europe remained more resilient.
Meanwhile, in the automotive sector, Deutz AG shares have experienced mixed technical signals while maintaining an overall upward trend that began in early 2025. Market analysts evaluating the company's long-term fundamentals noted that while the equity maintains a solid equity base and dividend payments, economic indicators from recent years offer a neutral outlook as the stock tests important moving averages.
In sports, the 1. FC Köln professional team is evaluating options to promote a young forward from the under-21 squad to fill gaps left by injuries. Coach René Wagner indicated that several players are under consideration, including Nilas Yacobi, who has recorded 13 scoring points in eleven matches, and Malek El Mala, who recently returned from injury with strong performances in the regional league.
Finally, corporations are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence avatars for initial job interviews. While these virtual recruiters offer efficiencies by screening hundreds of applicants around the clock in multiple languages, questions remain regarding how job seekers experience automated interactions and whether such practices impact candidate recruitment.
