Movistar Plus+, the premium subscription television and streaming service owned by Telefónica, remains a central figure in the Spanish media market. Since its official launch on July 8, 2015, the platform has served as a primary provider of entertainment, sports, and original content, resulting from the strategic integration of the Canal+ satellite service and the Movistar TV IPTV platform.

The service has maintained a robust subscriber base over the years, solidifying its position as a leading entity in the domestic pay-television sector. By the start of 2021, the platform reported approximately 3.9 million subscribers, representing nearly half of the Spanish market. As of the third quarter of 2025, the service continues to reach millions of households, adapting to shifting consumer habits by offering content through satellite, IPTV, and OTT streaming.

Accessibility has become a core component of the platform's strategy. Subscribers can access content via the Movistar Plus+ application on smart TVs, mobile devices, tablets, and web browsers. This flexibility allows users to engage with a wide variety of programming, including over 80 channels covering genres such as cinema, series, documentaries, and news. The platform also provides on-demand features like live TV rewinding, recording capabilities, and simultaneous streaming.

Sports broadcasting remains a cornerstone of the Movistar Plus+ value proposition. The platform holds exclusive rights to significant events, including matches from LaLiga EA SPORTS, full coverage of LaLiga Hypermotion, and select games from the Champions League and Premier League. Furthermore, the service provides extensive coverage of international sports, such as Grand Slam tennis, EuroLeague basketball, and Six Nations rugby, often bundling these offerings with fiber and mobile telecommunications packages.

Beyond its role as a distributor, the platform has invested in original production and cultural documentation. Recently, the service produced a documentary series featuring filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, who revisited his early career archives and Super-8 films from the 1970s. This project highlighted the director's long-standing connection to Telefónica, where he worked during the early stages of his creative journey before achieving international acclaim.

As the media landscape continues to shift toward digital-first consumption, Movistar Plus+ has sought to maintain its competitive edge by offering flexible subscription models without long-term commitments. By integrating diverse content libraries with high-profile sports rights and original programming, the platform continues to navigate the complexities of the modern television industry while serving a broad audience across Spain.
