The popular procedural crime drama "Criminal Minds" is coming to an end once again. Paramount+ announced that the upcoming 20th overall season of the franchise, and fifth under the "Criminal Minds: Evolution" subtitle, will serve as the final chapter for the Behavioral Analysis Unit. The farewell season is scheduled to premiere in 2027.

Showrunner and executive producer Erica Messer expressed her thoughts on the sudden conclusion in a public statement. "It’s hard to put into words what Criminal Minds has meant to all of us who have been fortunate enough to be part of this extraordinary journey, first on CBS for 15 seasons and then on Paramount+ for five," Messer stated, while noting that the team was "suddenly navigating the end of this chapter."

According to reports from Deadline and other outlets, the decision to cancel the series was made recently by the new leadership team at Paramount+. Because production on the 20th season had already wrapped prior to the cancellation announcement, it remains unclear whether the final episodes were written to function as a definitive series finale or if viewers will encounter unresolved plot lines.

The franchise first debuted on CBS in 2005, following a dedicated team of FBI criminal profilers tracking down dangerous serial killers. The original broadcast run spanned 15 seasons and more than 300 episodes before concluding in February 2020. During its CBS tenure, the series also inspired two short-lived spinoffs, "Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior" and "Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders."

Just two years after its broadcast cancellation, Paramount+ revived the property as "Criminal Minds: Evolution," shifting the format toward more serialized, darker storytelling across shorter 10-episode seasons. The streaming revival successfully brought back the majority of the beloved original cast, including Joe Mantegna as David Rossi, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Adam Rodriguez, and Paget Brewster, alongside newer addition RJ Hatanaka.

Cast members have begun sharing their reactions to the impending conclusion of the series. Kirsten Vangsness, who portrayed Penelope Garcia across all 20 seasons, addressed fans in an Instagram video, comparing the bittersweet end to Charlie receiving his chocolate in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." She also maintained hope for the future of the characters, stating that her boss believes there are still many stories left to tell.

While the final season does not yet have an exact release date, it is expected to bring back the core ensemble for one last mission. As the BAU prepares to close its files for good, both the broadcast era and the streaming continuation will remain available on Paramount+ for audiences to revisit.
