Niels Zonneveld captured his first Professional Darts Corporation ranking title at the 2026 Elten Safety Shoes Dutch Darts Championship on Sunday, defeating fellow countryman Danny Noppert 8-5 in the final. Competing in front of a 5,000-strong home crowd at the MECC Maastricht, Zonneveld claimed the £35,000 top prize and earned his debut at the upcoming Mr Vegas Grand Slam of Darts in November.

The new world number 28 entered the weekend as the highest-ranked player on the circuit without a ranking title. Despite falling behind early in the championship match, Zonneveld mounted a comeback by winning five consecutive legs. Although Noppert narrowed the deficit, a critical 157 checkout allowed Zonneveld to regain control before he sealed the victory.

Reflecting on his breakthrough performance, Zonneveld expressed his disbelief and joy. "It's still a dream, I can't believe it!" Zonneveld said. "The 157 was a really important shot, because I was getting nervous! It was my first final, so I can't blame myself. I have to enjoy this moment, I know that. It's just a dream-come-true."

Noppert, who became the world number seven following strong runs throughout the tournament, reached the final after defeating Dutch number one Gian van Veen 7-5. Despite a career-best 113.42 average earlier in the event and a clinical display on his doubles, Noppert suffered his fifth consecutive defeat in European Tour finals.

"He [Zonneveld] is a deserved winner," Noppert acknowledged following the match. "I had a chance for my first European Tour title, but he deserved it. I always have positive feelings. I always believe in myself and trust in myself."

The tournament also featured notable runs from other top competitors. Stephen Bunting secured his fifth consecutive appearance at the European Championship by reaching the semi-finals, while Gian van Veen set a tournament record with a 120.24 average during a whitewash victory earlier in the weekend.

Meanwhile, attention on the PDC calendar shifts ahead toward upcoming major events, including the World Darts Grand Prix scheduled to run from September 28 to October 4 at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester. That demanding tournament will feature the unique double-in, double-out rule, presenting an entirely different strategic challenge for the sport's elite players.
