Nikola Jokic Criticizes Nuggets Fans After Overtime Win Over Pelicans
The Denver star expressed frustration toward supporters who jeered the team during a sluggish first half.
Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic delivered a sharp message to a portion of the team's fanbase following a 141-135 overtime victory against the New Orleans Pelicans at Ball Arena. Despite securing their first win of the season through a remarkable comeback, Jokic took issue with supporters who booed the team as they fell behind early.
The contest began poorly for the home side, which trailed by 16 points at halftime after entering the locker room down 73-57. Frustrated fans at Ball Arena made their displeasure known, directing jeers at the players during the first half after the squad fell behind by as many as 23 points early in the third quarter.
Jokic put together a stellar performance to spark the rally, finishing with 35 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists for his 199th career regular-season triple-double. However, the star center remained displeased with the negative reaction from the stands when the team struggled initially.
We get booed in the first home game, Jokic told reporters after the matchup, adding that supporters who chose to jeer should not return. He emphasized that the team never quits and has successfully overturned similar deficits in the past.
Head coach David Adelman called his team's first-half performance dismal and horrendous, though he praised the squad's resilience. Forward Aaron Gordon also acknowledged the slow start, noting that the team cannot afford to play lackadaisically against top contenders.
Teammate Jamal Murray provided a vital offensive spark, scoring 42 points and delivering a rallying speech inside the huddle when the team faced a double-digit deficit. Rookie Trevon Brazile added 17 points, contributing heavily in his home debut as Denver outlasted New Orleans.
For the Pelicans, Trey Murphy III led the scoring effort with 26 points, while Dejounte Murray contributed 22 points under first-year head coach Jamahl Mosley. Despite the strong effort, New Orleans dropped its third consecutive game to start the season, while Denver improved to 1-1.
