The relationship dramedy "The Invite," directed by and starring Olivia Wilde, made its subscription-streaming debut exclusively on HBO Max. The movie arrived on the platform on Friday, October 23, following a successful theatrical run.

The R-rated film serves as Olivia Wilde's third feature as a director, following her previous work on "Booksmart" and "Don't Worry Darling." Written by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones, the movie is an English-language adaptation of filmmaker Cesc Gay's Spanish film "The People Upstairs."

The plot centers on Joe, played by Seth Rogen, and Angela, played by Wilde, a married couple whose relationship is struggling. In an effort to shake up their routine, they invite their enigmatic upstairs neighbors, played by Edward Norton and Penélope Cruz, over for a dinner party that quickly goes off the rails and takes unexpected turns.

The small core ensemble features Seth Rogen as Joe, Olivia Wilde as Angela, Penélope Cruz as Piña, and Edward Norton as Hawk. Behind the scenes, Wilde noted that the cast approached the production similarly to a stage play, utilizing opportunities to workshop the material and rehearse before shooting the film chronologically on film.

Commercially, the A24 project became a box office hit against its reported budget of under $15 million, grossing $61.2 million globally. It has also received positive responses from critics and audiences alike, holding high scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

For viewers looking to stream the movie at home, "The Invite" is available on HBO Max with various bundle options through providers such as Sling TV and DIRECTV, which offer introductory trials and package extensions for subscribers wishing to watch the relationship comedy unfold.
