Omarzai Smashes Maiden Century as Afghanistan Secures T20I Series Win
Azmatullah Omarzai scored 116 runs and took a wicket in Sharjah to help Afghanistan take an unassailable 2-0 lead against Zimbabwe.
Azmatullah Omarzai produced a sensational all-round performance, highlighted by his maiden Twenty20 international century, to propel Afghanistan to a 20-run victory over Zimbabwe at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The triumph gave Afghanistan an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match bilateral series with one fixture remaining, following their 37-run win in the series opener.
Afghanistan appeared to be in deep trouble early in the contest after suffering a disastrous collapse against a Zimbabwe squad playing without injured paceman Blessing Muzarabani. Zimbabwe's bowling attack tore through the Afghan top order during the early powerplay overs, leaving Afghanistan reeling at 38 for five. Facing a potential blowout, Omarzai took charge alongside middle-order batter Ijaz Ahmad Ahmadzai to completely shift the momentum of the game.
Omarzai and Ahmadzai combined for an astonishing 142-run partnership off only 59 deliveries, establishing a new world record for the highest sixth-wicket stand in men’s T20 international history. Their aggressive counterattack completely dismantled the pressure Zimbabwe had exerted. Omarzai dominated the bowling with fearless stroke play, compiling 116 runs off 50 balls with five fours and 12 sixes. Ahmadzai provided vital support from the other end, scoring 52 runs off 27 deliveries to stabilize and then accelerate the innings.
A blistering late cameo from star all-rounder Rashid Khan pushed Afghanistan beyond the 220-run threshold, as he struck an unbeaten 25 off just six deliveries to take the team to 221 for seven in their 20 overs. Rashid subsequently made cricket history during the second innings by becoming the first bowler ever to capture 200 wickets in men's T20 internationals, ending his four-over spell with figures of one for 29.
In pursuit of 222 runs, Zimbabwe made an aggressive start, reaching 59 for two during the powerplay overs. However, Afghanistan's bowlers struck at regular intervals to halt the chase, leaving Zimbabwe in trouble at 82 for five after 10 overs. Abdollah Ahmadzai proved effective with the ball, collecting two wickets for 34 runs in four overs, while Omarzai added to his batting heroics by claiming one wicket to stifle Zimbabwe's middle order.
Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza led a valiant effort to keep his side in contention, blasting an unbeaten 106 runs off 56 deliveries featuring five fours and nine sixes. Partnering with Tafadzwa Tsiga, who contributed an unbeaten 31 runs off 23 balls, Raza kept the pressure on until the final deliveries. However, Zimbabwe ultimately finished on 202 for five, falling 20 runs short of the target in what became the highest-scoring T20 international ever held at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
The win marked Afghanistan's seventh consecutive victory against Zimbabwe and secured their eighth straight T20I series triumph over them, taking their overall record to 21 wins in 23 head-to-head encounters. Speaking after receiving player of the match honors, Omarzai stated that the team felt severe pressure after losing early wickets, but he urged Ahmadzai to remain calm and maintain a positive approach. Afghanistan captain Ibrahim Zadran praised the duo for demonstrating the squad's resilience from difficult positions, while Raza voiced disappointment with Zimbabwe's first-innings performance and pledged to address complacency while thanking fans for their support.
