Pakistan Defeats England by 87 Runs in ODI Tri-Series
Arafat Minhas starred with both bat and ball to lead Pakistan to a dominant victory over England at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
Pakistan secured an 87-run victory against England in the second match of the One-Day International tri-series at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The hosts posted a total of 302 for 9 in their 50 overs before bowling out England for 215 in 38.4 overs, claiming their second consecutive win of the tournament.
England captain Harry Brook won the toss and elected to field first under lights, anticipating that dew would become a factor later in the evening. The decision initially paid off as England's bowling attack reduced Pakistan to 81 for 4 and subsequently 133 for 5, with Gus Atkinson and Sonny Baker making early breakthroughs.
However, a resilient recovery led by Hasan Nawaz and Arafat Minhas changed the momentum of the innings. Nawaz scored 79 runs off 74 deliveries, featuring four sixes and five fours, while Minhas contributed an unbeaten 59 runs. A late cameo of 39 runs from Faheem Ashraf further propelled the total past the 300-run mark, aided by a slow over-rate penalty against England in the final two overs.
In response, England's opening pair of Tom Banton and Ben Duckett established a solid platform with a 91-run partnership. Banton recorded a half-century, scoring 57 runs off 46 balls, while Duckett added 45 before being dismissed by Haris Rauf. At 127 for 2, England appeared to be firmly in control of the run chase.
The turning point arrived when left-arm spinner Arafat Minhas dismantled the middle and lower order. Minhas finished with career-best figures of 6 for 40 in his allotted overs, successfully trapping Jordan Cox lbw for 18 and later dismissing Harry Brook, Will Jacks, and Adil Rashid. Minhas also executed a late run out to dismiss Gus Atkinson and seal the match.
Reflecting on the performance, Harry Brook noted the batting collapse during the post-match assessment. "The story of the innings was not enough partnerships and losing wickets in clumps. We didn't manage to put their bowlers under enough pressure to make them miss," Brook stated.
With the win, Pakistan holds a strong position at the top of the tri-series standings after previously defeating Sri Lanka. England will look to rebound when they face Sri Lanka in the third fixture of the tournament at Rawalpindi.
