Pakistan Secures Tri-Series Final Spot After Thrilling Win Over England

An unbeaten last-wicket partnership propelled Pakistan past England at Gaddafi Stadium, leaving the visitors' tournament hopes hanging by a thread.

Pakistan secured their place in the final of the 2026 ODI Tri-Series with a dramatic one-wicket victory over England at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Facing a target of 241, Pakistan found themselves in deep trouble at 154 for 9 before an exceptional last-wicket rescue mission changed the course of the match and the tournament standings.

Shadab Khan and Haris Rauf combined for an unbeaten 89-run partnership to guide the hosts home with 17 balls to spare. Shadab anchored the tense chase with a brilliant century, reaching three figures in the 47th over and leaving Pakistan needing just three runs to complete the remarkable comeback. The match-winning stand surpassed a tenth-wicket ODI chase record that had stood since the 1975 World Cup.

Earlier in the contest, England had been bowled out for 241 despite a resilient 105-run knock from Ben Duckett. While England's total appeared formidable as Pakistan's wickets tumbled midway through the innings, the late-game heroics completely shifted the momentum. The defeat left England winless through three matches and facing a difficult path to the final.

With three victories from three matches, Pakistan sits comfortably atop the standings with six points. Because Sri Lanka can reach a maximum of six points and England is capped at two, Pakistan's spot in the October 31 final is guaranteed regardless of the outcome of their remaining group fixture.

England's qualification hopes are now entirely out of their own hands. Winless in the double round-robin competition, England must rely on a specific sequence of results to sneak into the final. They require Pakistan to defeat Sri Lanka, and subsequently need to secure a massive victory against Sri Lanka themselves to overcome a severe net run rate deficit.

Evaluating the mathematical challenge ahead, England carries a net run rate of -0.733 compared to Sri Lanka's -0.348. As former international player Nasser Hussain observed regarding the unpredictability of tri-series tournaments, England's fate now depends heavily on outside assistance and a monumental margin of victory in their final group outing.

Sri Lanka holds the keys to the remaining qualification spot, needing only one victory in their final two matches—against Pakistan or England—to punch their ticket to the championship match. If Sri Lanka loses both fixtures, both teams would finish on two points, forcing a net run rate tiebreaker that heavily favors the Islanders over the struggling English squad.
