Phoenix Suns Face Early Struggles Following Opening Night Defeat to Portland

The Phoenix Suns look to regroup after dropping their season opener to the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night at the Moda Center.

The Phoenix Suns opened their 2026-27 NBA season with a difficult outing on Wednesday night, suffering a lopsided 124-83 defeat against the Portland Trail Blazers at the Moda Center in Oregon. Portland seized control early by jumping out to a 21-0 lead in the opening frame, leaving the Suns searching for answers as the deficit eventually swelled to as many as 52 points.

Phoenix struggled significantly on the offensive end throughout the contest, shooting just 36 percent from the field and managing a meager 6-of-31 performance from beyond the arc. Guard Devin Booker served as the lone bright spot for the team, scoring 23 points in 29 minutes while adding four rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block.

However, Booker lacked sufficient support as several key rotational players encountered shooting difficulties. Dillon Brooks contributed 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting, Miles Bridges managed eight points while going 0-for-5 from 3-point range, and Jalen Green finished with 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting. Additionally, Collin Gillespie went scoreless from long distance, missing all eight of his attempts from beyond the arc.

The blowout loss raised early-season concerns regarding the team's offensive rhythm and spacing. Analysts noted that all seven of Booker's field goals were unassisted, highlighting a lack of playmaking and ball movement that left the star guard isolated against Portland's defense. The Suns finished the game with a concerning minus-43 rating for their primary scoring option as the team fell behind decisively.

Wednesday's matchup marked the continuation of a competitive rivalry between the two franchises. During the previous 2025-26 regular season, the Suns won two out of three games against Portland, with both victories coming on the road, though the Trail Blazers later secured a win in the Play-In tournament.

Looking ahead, Phoenix aims to address its early offensive shortcomings and integrate new roster additions as the long regular season unfolds. The team hopes to bounce back quickly and establish better cohesion following the difficult road loss in the Pacific Northwest.
