Police and Families Respond to Recent Dangerous Dog Incidents in Germany
Recent police interventions and family emergencies involving aggressive dogs in German cities have resulted in injuries, investigations, and emergency medical treatment.
Law enforcement officers and residents in Germany recently responded to separate emergency situations involving aggressive dogs, resulting in police use of firearms, pepper spray, and critical medical interventions. The events highlight ongoing safety concerns regarding certain dog breeds and the unpredictable nature of animal behavior during police checks and domestic disputes.
In Görlitz, local police officers on Saturday evening checked a 38-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy following a witness tip regarding suspected trespassing on Luisenstraße. The minor was accompanied by an leashed American Staffordshire Terrier. According to police reports, the adult suspect became aggressive and uncooperative while officers verified identities and conducted searches.
As tension escalated, the dog broke away from its leash, ran toward its owner, and charged at the searching officers. To neutralize the immediate threat, an officer fired a service weapon, causing a minor flesh wound to the animal. The dog briefly fled before returning, prompting a second shot that missed the animal and instead struck a nearby compact car.
Following the gunfire, the 38-year-old suspect attempted a physical assault against the officers. Police subdued him by deploying pepper spray. The injured dog received medical treatment before being secured and transported to an animal shelter. Medical staff examined the adult suspect at a hospital before releasing him, while authorities returned the 13-year-old boy to his legal guardians. The criminal police have launched an ongoing investigation into the incident.
In a separate and more severe domestic incident in Marburg, a 49-year-old man stabbed his own Staffordshire Bullterrier to death to save his 70-year-old mother from a ferocious attack. The assault occurred on Monday evening inside an apartment building on Potsdamer Straße in the Richtsberg district.
Police stated that the dog severely bit the elderly woman on the arm, creating life-threatening bleeding that brought her close to passing away. When the 49-year-old son intervened to rescue his mother, the animal turned and attacked him as well. Facing immediate danger, the dog owner used a knife to kill the animal.
Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene before medical personnel and utilized a tourniquet to apply heavy pressure to the mother's arm wound, an action investigators believe ultimately saved her life. Emergency services subsequently transported both the mother and son to the university hospital in Marburg for urgent medical care.
Local authorities noted that the dog had no prior record of aggressive behavior and that the owner possessed a valid permit to keep the restricted breed. Investigators are currently examining the case for potential negligent bodily injury and plan to interview the victims once they recover sufficiently to speak. Police also urged the public to disregard false rumors and misinformation circulating on social media regarding the emergency.
