Police Seek Witnesses After Wrong-Way Driver Causes Crash in Wittlich
Authorities in Germany are investigating a hit-and-run incident involving a vehicle traveling the wrong way through a roundabout.
Law enforcement authorities in Wittlich, Germany, are actively seeking witnesses following a hit-and-run incident caused by a wrong-way driver last Saturday. According to the Wittlich police department, the dangerous driving event occurred near the Benninghoven company facility in the Wengerohr district.
Investigators reported that a dark-colored passenger car entered a local roundabout traveling against the prescribed direction of traffic. The erratic maneuver forced another motorist to take evasive action to avoid a direct head-on collision.
To dodge the oncoming vehicle, the second driver swerved onto a traffic island, resulting in property damage estimated in the four-figure range. Rather than stopping to assess the situation, the motorist responsible for the wrong-way driving fled the scene without authorization.
The Wittlich police inspectorate has launched a formal investigation into the episode. Authorities have filed criminal charges for unauthorized departure from the scene of an accident, commonly known as a hit-and-run, as well as for endangering road traffic.
Police officials have urged anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have information regarding the identity of the dark-colored vehicle and its driver, to come forward. Witnesses are asked to contact the Wittlich police inspectorate directly.
In a separate traffic incident reported elsewhere in Germany on Monday morning, a young child sustained life-threatening injuries after being struck by a car. That accident took place on a supermarket parking lot in Trossingen, located in the Tuttlingen district.
According to the Constance police headquarters, a 67-year-old woman was driving her Volkswagen through the parking lot when the collision occurred. Investigators stated that a three-year-old boy seemingly ran out in front of the vehicle as he walked from the supermarket exit toward a shopping cart corral.
Emergency responders and local authorities intervened immediately following the supermarket parking lot collision. The Zimmern ob Rottweil traffic service department took over the investigation, and prosecutors in Rottweil ordered an expert accident reconstructionist to determine the exact cause of the crash.
