Portland Dominates Phoenix in Historic Opening Night Across the NBA
The Portland Trail Blazers secured a commanding victory over the Phoenix Suns during a season-opening slate marked by a record number of lopsided blowouts.
The start of the NBA regular season brought historic and unprecedented lopsided outcomes, highlighted by the Portland Trail Blazers overpowering the Phoenix Suns 124-83. Wednesday night's slate of games proved to be one-sided across the league, with multiple contenders stumbling out of the gate in blowout fashion.
According to OptaStats data, six different teams suffered defeats of 20 or more points during the opening night. This occurrence marks the first time in NBA history that such a high volume of heavy blowouts happened on the very same day of a season's start.
Among those heavy defeats, the Portland Trail Blazers delivered one of the most dominant performances of the evening by crushing the Phoenix Suns by a 41-point margin. Similarly, the Toronto Raptors routed the Chicago Bulls 135-92, contributing to the pair of games that were decided by more than 40 points.
The opening night ledger also captured struggles from perennial playoff contenders like the Miami Heat and the Golden State Warriors. Miami hosted the Minnesota Timberwolves in a game that marked the regular-season debut of superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo with his new franchise.
Despite Antetokounmpo posting a strong performance with 35 points, the Heat fell 131-106 as Minnesota's Anthony Edwards led all scorers with 45 points. No other Miami player managed to score more than 15 points, prompting immediate questions about team depth from head coach Erik Spoelstra.
Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors entered their opening matchup shorthanded, playing without Jimmy Butler as he continues recovering from a torn ACL and Kristaps Porziņģis due to a persistent illness. The Los Angeles Lakers capitalized on the situation to secure a 127-105 home victory.
Stephen Curry tried to carry the load for Golden State by scoring 23 points, but no teammate exceeded 14 points. Conversely, the Lakers received a historic performance from newcomer Walker Kessler, who matched a 56-year-old feat originally set by Wilt Chamberlain by shooting 12-for-12 from the field and finishing with 26 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks.
Luka Doncic paced the Lakers with 28 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists, anchoring a revamped roster under head coach JJ Redick. As the league processes the opening week, teams like Portland and Los Angeles have set an early tone while others search for quick adjustments.
