Professional Drifter Liu Shuai Competes at Wuhan International Circuit
The Hebei-born driver reflects on his racing journey and dedication to the sport during the recent competition in Wuhan.
Engines roared and tires smoked as professional drifter Liu Shuai navigated high-speed turns at the Wuhan International Circuit. The event brought together skilled drivers, with Liu returning to the venue where he previously secured double championships in the elite single and tandem categories during the China Automobile Drift Championship.
Expressing his appreciation for the venue, Liu noted that the broad layout allows drivers to push their limits. "The Wuhan International Circuit is brand new and spacious; driving here feels amazing," he remarked, highlighting the ample track width that enables competitors to achieve higher speeds and wider entry angles.
Born in 1994, Liu has been actively drifting for only three years, though his passion for motorsports began during childhood through automotive movies and video games. His entry into competitive racing started when his mentor, Zhang Chenhui, lent him a Nissan A31 for his debut at the CDB Drift Asia Cup in Beijing. Despite having minimal equipment and competing for the first time, Liu ultimately claimed the championship.
Reflecting on that initial victory, Liu said, "I was really excited at the time, and I suddenly felt that drifting wasn't so far away from me." Following his early success, he purchased a used Laurel C33 from a friend and refurbished it. Today, that same car continues to accompany him to competitions, adorned with logos representing his journey, his mentor, and his teammates.
Beyond his career as a competitive driver, Liu has embraced roles as a trainer and promoter of racing culture. In 2021, he established a sports development company in Zhuozhou, Hebei, focused on driver training. He subsequently constructed the Feichi Racing Park, a go-kart facility featuring a widened track designed to accommodate drifting.
Explaining the motivation behind building the facility, Liu stated that his goal is to provide individuals with a passion for motorsports an accessible environment to experience drifting. "The original intention of building the venue was to let more people with racing dreams experience the joy of drifting with a lower threshold," he explained.
Looking to the future, Liu remains fully committed to the sport, stating that he intends to pursue drifting for the rest of his life. As engines continue to rev and tires generate clouds of smoke on the track, his focus remains firmly fixed on both competitive driving and nurturing the next generation of racers.
