Quinn Hughes Returns to Vancouver, Leads Wild Past Canucks 4-2
The former Vancouver captain recorded a goal and an assist against his old team to reach 500 career NHL points.
Former Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes returned to Rogers Arena on Sunday night, receiving a hostile reception from fans before leading the Minnesota Wild to a 4-2 victory. Despite being greeted by a chorus of boos during warmups and throughout the contest, Hughes delivered a stellar performance, scoring a goal and adding an assist to secure his 500th career NHL point.
The milestone goal arrived midway through the second period when Hughes scored off a rebound on a power play, extending the Wild's lead to 3-0. Early in the third period, he set up Kirill Kaprizov for a goal, making it 4-0 for Minnesota and highlighting a dominant stretch of play.
Hundreds of fans arrived early, many wearing Canucks jerseys featuring Hughes' name and former number 43, hoping to catch a glimpse of the star American defenseman. Displeasure from the crowd was loud and vocal, raining down whenever his name was announced or displayed on the arena's big screen.
However, the atmosphere shifted slightly during the first television timeout when a tribute video for the blue liner played. The initial boos transformed into a mixture of whistles, clapping, and a standing ovation from sections of the crowd. As the video concluded, Hughes skated out from the bench and raised his stick in a salute, while players from both teams tapped their sticks on the boards.
“The passion with the fan base is what makes it special to play here,” Hughes said after the game. “So for me, it was cool to be back here, and exciting. And I’m glad we got the win.” He added that he was proud of his six and a half seasons with the organization and appreciated the cheers he ultimately received.
Canucks defenseman Luke Schenn acknowledged the complicated emotions surrounding the return. “He definitely deserved the cheers,” Schenn said. “I don’t know if there’s really much reason to be negative as far as what he’s done for the organization.” Schenn also noted that Hughes played brilliantly in the game's second half.
Hughes was traded from Vancouver to Minnesota in December after making it clear he was unlikely to sign a long-term extension following the expiration of his contract. The blockbuster trade brought Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, defenseman Zeev Buium, and a 2026 first-round draft pick to Vancouver.
With Sunday's performance, Hughes became the second-fastest American defenseman to reach 500 NHL points, accomplishing the feat in 520 games. Brian Leetch holds the record, having reached the milestone in 496 games with the New York Rangers.
