Real Madrid Defeats AEK Athens 3-2 in UEFA Champions League Match
Federico Valverde scored a late winner in stoppage time to secure three crucial points for the Spanish side in Athens.
Real Madrid secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory against AEK Athens at the Allwyn Arena on Wednesday during the fourth round of the UEFA Champions League. With this result, the Spanish giants advanced to 12 points, moving into second place in the competition standings, trailing Paris Saint-Germain only on goal difference. Meanwhile, AEK Athens remains in 30th place with three points.
The home side started aggressively in Greece, testing Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois early on. AEK broke the deadlock in the 11th minute when Luka Jovic passed to Aboubakary Koita, who maneuvered past his marker and fired a low shot past Courtois to put the Greek team ahead.
Real Madrid responded as the match progressed. Jude Bellingham thought he had equalized shortly after, but his goal was disallowed for offside. However, Bellingham struck again legitimately in the 31st minute, connecting with a cross from Marc Cucurella to finish with a clever backheel shot and level the score at 1-1 before halftime.
The second half brought heightened intensity and continuous attacks from both sides. AEK reclaimed the lead in the 30th minute of the half during a swift counterattack, when Aboubakary Koita drove down the left flank and set up Stavros Pilios, who drilled a low shot through Courtois's legs.
Real Madrid quickly answered once more. Just minutes later, Bellingham launched a deep pass to Denzel Dumfries, who crossed the ball into the area for Kylian Mbappé to convert and tie the match 2-2. Mbappé nearly found the back of the net again later in the half, striking the crossbar after a pass from Endrick.
The decisive moment arrived in stoppage time. Federico Valverde received the ball at the edge of the box and unleashed a powerful strike into the left corner of the net, sealing the 3-2 victory for the visitors. The dramatic finish capped off an intense European fixture.
Following this European encounter, both clubs return to domestic league action. AEK Athens is scheduled to face Levadiakos in the Greek Championship, while Real Madrid prepares to play Valencia away at the Mestalla Stadium in La Liga.
