Saquon Barkley Set to Play for Eagles Against Washington
Philadelphia running back Saquon Barkley has cleared the injury report and will take the field for Sunday night's divisional matchup.
Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is officially active and ready to play in Sunday's primetime divisional game against the Washington Commanders. After dealing with lingering hamstring and back issues that hampered his availability in recent weeks, Barkley enters the matchup completely off the injury report and prepared to anchor the team's offense.
Barkley's return comes at a critical juncture for an Eagles squad mired in a five-game losing streak that has dropped their record to 2-5. Following a disappointing performance last week against the Dallas Cowboys where a back issue cut his playing time short, the running back managed to return to practice on a limited basis by Friday and demonstrated his determination to compete despite ongoing physical hurdles.
Reflecting on his motivation to play through injuries, Barkley explained to reporters that he does not want to take his time on the field for granted. "One day I'm not going to be playing football," Barkley said. "Whenever that is, I don't want to look back and be like, 'I could've gave it a chance and I didn't.' I like playing football. So if I have an opportunity to play, I'm going to try my best to play."
The veteran running back has faced a challenging campaign in 2026 following a stellar previous season that included a Super Bowl title and over 2,000 rushing yards. Across five appearances this year, Barkley has tallied 244 rushing yards and one touchdown on 43 carries, as injuries have consistently disrupted his rhythm and overall production on the gridiron.
While Barkley's presence provides a vital boost, the Philadelphia offense will face significant challenges due to mounting injuries elsewhere on the roster. Backup quarterback Tanner McKee will make his third consecutive start in place of the injured Jalen Hurts, looking to secure his first win since taking over the starting role.
Compounding matters for McKee and the passing game, the Eagles will be heavily depleted at wide receiver. Star wideout DeVonta Smith has been officially ruled out for the second consecutive week due to a persistent hamstring injury that has limited him to just four appearances this season. In addition, wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks will also miss the contest with an ankle injury, leaving the team without its top two boundary options.
Despite swirling speculation ahead of the November 10 trade deadline regarding whether Philadelphia might offload veteran talent to accumulate future draft picks, general manager Howie Roseman and the organization have decided to keep Barkley firmly in place. Retaining the star running back signals the team's commitment to preserving its core championship foundation rather than undergoing a complete roster teardown.
Kickoff between the Eagles and the Commanders at Northwest Stadium is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday. With Barkley back in the backfield and looking to spark an offensive turnaround, Philadelphia aims to overcome its current adversity and reignite its aspirations in the tightly contested NFC East.
