A serious traffic accident occurred in Saint-Thibéry, near Pézenas, on Tuesday evening, leaving a 14-year-old teenager in critical condition after a violent collision with a passenger vehicle.

The incident took place at approximately 6:30 p.m. on the D13E15 departmental road. According to local authorities, a motorist in his sixties attempted to access the D13 toward Saint-Thibéry when he struck a scooter traveling in its proper lane toward Nézignan-l'Évêque.

The impact threw the two 14-year-old residents of Saint-Thibéry who were riding the scooter several meters away. The two-wheeled vehicle became trapped underneath the car and was dragged along the asphalt, igniting both vehicles and causing them to burst into flames.

Emergency responders arrived in large numbers from surrounding fire stations to battle the blaze. The driver of the car, a resident of Nézignan-l'Évêque, was uninjured in the crash though left in shock.

The driver of the scooter sustained the most severe injuries. Due to the unavailability of a helicopter, he was transported by ambulance to the university hospital in Montpellier in an absolute emergency state, accompanied by gendarmes who cleared the route. Despite suffering multiple fractures and internal injuries, reports indicated his condition did not prompt critical concern.

The second teenager on the scooter sustained lesser injuries and was transported urgently to the hospital in Béziers for medical treatment.

Local firefighters and emergency services noted that a second two-wheeled vehicle may have been involved in the initial sequence according to certain preliminary accounts, though primary reports focus on the car and the scooter. Gendarmes from the Pézenas brigade administered an alcohol breath test to the car driver, which returned negative results. A blood test was also administered to the injured scooter driver given his medical condition, with results pending.

Preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation suggest that the motorist, potentially blocked from view by another vehicle while turning left across traffic, failed to notice the oncoming scooter. Traffic between Saint-Thibéry and Nézignan-l'Évêque faced major disruptions and was completely blocked in both directions as authorities secured the scene and initiated inquiries.
