Severe Storms Leave Nearly 300,000 Homes Without Power in France
As Storm Austen moves away, authorities prepare for a second system named Boelo to impact parts of Europe.
A powerful low-pressure system swept across Europe, leaving nearly 300,000 households in France without electricity and severely disrupting rail and air transportation. The severe weather system, identified as Storm Austen, brought hurricane-force winds reaching up to 179 kilometers per hour and heavy downpours overnight, knocking down trees and scattering debris across roads.
The French electricity distribution company Enedis reported that the vast majority of the outages occurred along the western and northern coasts, specifically in Brittany and Normandy. Meanwhile, across the English Channel, approximately 12,000 homes lost power before engineers restored service, according to the British National Grid.
Transportation networks faced extensive disruptions throughout the affected regions. French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot announced that all rail service was suspended in Normandy, with major delays expected on commuter lines around Paris. Flight operations at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris also experienced significant impacts, with several flights diverted to Orly Airport and other regional hubs.
Météo-France issued orange alerts for much of the country's northwestern territory, warning that strong winds and thunderstorms would persist through the end of the week. The initial storm system has particularly impacted Île-de-France, Oise, and Aisne, uprooting numerous trees that had been weakened by prior dry spells.
Looking ahead to the weekend, weather services are tracking a second approaching system named Storm Boelo. The British Met Office indicated that Boelo is expected to affect Northern Ireland, Scotland, and parts of northern England with strengthening winds and heavy rainfall. In exposed locations, gusts could reach speeds between 113 and 129 kilometers per hour.
Regional authorities across affected areas are urging residents to remain cautious as the consecutive weather disturbances maintain unstable conditions throughout the region. Repair crews continue working to restore utility services while clearing blocked roadways and managing transit delays.
