Storm Boelo Batters UK as Severe Weather Disrupts Travel and Power
Gusts reaching 135 kph have left over 82,000 properties without power and triggered extensive transit delays across parts of Scotland and northern England.
Severe weather continued to impact northern parts of the United Kingdom as Storm Boelo battered the region with powerful winds reaching up to 135 kph. An amber wind warning issued by the Met Office remained active until 9 p.m. following the arrival of the season's second named storm.
Engineers and energy networks have managed to reconnect 344,900 customers, but approximately 82,600 properties remained without electricity. Wind gusts peaked early Sunday morning, hitting 135 kph in Argyll and Bute, 133.5 kph in Snowdonia, and 132 kph in the Inner Hebrides.
The severe conditions caused widespread travel disruptions across Scotland. Network Rail Scotland reported flooding from tracks to platforms at one Glasgow station, alongside fallen trees blocking lines elsewhere. Rail operators implemented speed restrictions and closed several railway sections.
In addition to transit challenges, high winds, fallen trees, and damaged surfaces prompted the closure of multiple major roads. The Met Office warned of potential dangers to life from flying debris and crashing waves, urging residents to stay indoors where possible.
Environmental agencies issued numerous flood warnings and alerts across northern England and Scotland. The Environment Agency and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency reported dozens of active warnings as heavy rain and saturated grounds heightened flood risks in vulnerable areas.
Storm Boelo followed closely behind Storm Austen, the first named storm of the season, which brought strong winds to southern portions of the UK. Authorities continue to monitor weather patterns as recovery and repair efforts proceed across the affected regions.
