The India women's national cricket team hosted Zimbabwe for their historic first-ever One Day International meeting on Friday at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi, Vadodara. The match marks the opening fixture of a three-match 50-over series following India's dominant 3-0 sweep in the preceding T20I series.

Entering the contest as the third-ranked side in the format against fourteenth-ranked Zimbabwe, India took the field under the full-time ODI captaincy of Smriti Mandhana for the first time. Mandhana took over leadership duties from Harmanpreet Kaur, aiming to maintain the winning momentum established during the T20I leg.

During the opening innings, left-arm spinner Shree Charani delivered a standout performance with the ball. Charani finished her spell with career-best figures in ODIs, taking four wickets while conceding 23 runs across her ten overs, which included three maidens.

Charani's crucial breakthroughs helped disrupt the touring side's batting lineup as Zimbabwe worked to build partnerships through a resilient knock from Beloved Biza. Alongside Charani, fellow bowler Kranti Gaud also chipped in with key dismissals as the visiting batters attempted to accelerate the scoring rate in the latter half of the innings.

The series represents a significant milestone in international cricket as global governing bodies push to provide lower-ranked teams with broader exposure against top-tier opposition. For Zimbabwe, the ongoing tour offers vital international experience to develop player capabilities and performance on the global stage.

Prior to the match, the home side was forced to make adjustments to the squad after veteran pacer Renuka Singh Thakur was ruled out of the series due to workload requirements, with Jintimani Kalita stepping in as her replacement. Additionally, India continued managing squad depth in the absence of Jemimah Rodrigues, who remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.
