South Africa Defeats Australia by an Innings and 31 Runs in Second Test
The Proteas leveled the three-Test series 1-1 after securing a dominant victory at St George's Park.
South Africa secured a commanding innings and 31-run victory over Australia on the fifth and final day of the second Test at St George's Park in Gqeberha, leveling the three-match series 1-1. The result sets up a decisive final Test scheduled for next week in Cape Town.
Despite significant weather disruptions that washed out the entire morning session and limited play significantly during the first two days, the Proteas managed to engineer a remarkable win. Captain Temba Bavuma reflected on the challenges, stating, "The weather wanted to play a part today and we were scrambling a little bit in the changeroom (this morning), with us not too sure about the weather. But we were very excited as soon as we got on."
The foundation for South Africa's success was laid earlier in the match when Bavuma recorded a career-best century of 179 runs, supported by strong lower-order contributions from Marco Jansen, who scored 85, and Simon Harmer, who added 82 to push the total to 425-9 declared. Following that, Jansen decimated the Australian batting lineup with figures of 5-33, bowling the visitors out for just 99 runs in their first innings and prompting the follow-on.
Australia showed much better resistance during their second innings, largely driven by opener Travis Head, who notched his 13th Test century with a score of 121 off 190 balls, and nightwatchman Scott Boland, who blocked out 166 balls to accumulate 40 runs. However, Wiaan Mulder broke through by cramping Head with a short delivery that the batsman deflected onto his own stumps.
Shortly afterward, veteran Australian batsman Steve Smith fell for just three runs after attempting an uncharacteristic pull shot off Kagiso Rabada that caught the swirling wind. The ball was skied to Matthew Breetzke at midwicket, who secured the catch on the second attempt after a juggle, leaving Australia struggling at 225-6.
Mulder continued his impressive spell after tea, removing Boland and Australia captain Pat Cummins in quick succession. Rabada then bowled Mitchell Starc, and Jansen fittingly wrapped up the match by having Josh Hazlewood caught at slip by Aiden Markram, leaving the visitors all out for 295.
Rabada finished the innings with figures of 4-77 and Mulder claimed 3-64, capping off an extraordinary team effort by the hosts. The two teams will now head to Newlands in Cape Town for the series finale starting next Tuesday.
