South Africa Defeats Australia by an Innings to Level Test Series
The Proteas secured a dominant victory in Gqeberha on Thursday, setting up a decisive third Test match in Cape Town.
South Africa bounced back from an opening defeat to defeat Australia by an innings and 31 runs in the second Test at St George's Park in Gqeberha on Thursday. The resounding victory leveled the three-match series at 1-1, following Australia's 214-run triumph in the first Test in Durban.
Rain heavily disrupted the match, washing out the entirety of the first session on the final day and delaying South Africa's push for the remaining wickets as fading light closed in. Australia resumed their second innings at 156/4, needing a substantial partnership to stave off defeat after being forced to follow on.
Travis Head led the Australian resistance, building on his overnight score to notch his 13th Test century. Head compiled 121 runs from 190 balls, while nightwatchman Scott Boland frustrated the hosts with a stubborn knock of 40 runs from 166 deliveries to eat up valuable time.
However, all-rounder Wiaan Mulder shifted momentum back to South Africa during a crucial post-tea spell. Mulder broke the stubborn partnership by bowling Boland, quickly followed by removing Australian captain Pat Cummins for four runs. Mulder also accounted for the vital wicket of Head, finishing his spell with impressive figures of 3/64.
Kagiso Rabada provided solid support from the other end, capturing 4/77. Rabada notably dismissed Mitchell Starc, while Marco Jansen delivered the final blow by inducing an edge from Josh Hazlewood, caught by Aiden Markram in the slips to bowl Australia out for 295.
South Africa's remarkable recovery had laid the foundation for the victory earlier in the contest. After being reduced to 110/6 in their first innings midway through the third day, captain Temba Bavuma played a heroic captain's knock of 179 runs. Bavuma received stellar support from Jansen, who added 85 runs, and Simon Harmer, who contributed 82 runs, helping the Proteas reach a formidable total of 425/9 before declaring.
Australia faltered badly in their first innings, collapsing to just 99 runs as Jansen wreaked havoc with a spell of 5/33. That dismal batting display forced the visitors to follow on, ultimately setting up the dramatic finish on day five.
With the series now tied at 1-1, both teams will travel to Cape Town for the third and final Test match, which is scheduled to begin on Tuesday and will decide the series winner.
