Sporting suffered its first defeat of the domestic campaign on Sunday after falling 2-1 to Académico de Viseu at the Estádio de Alvalade during the ninth round of the Primeira Liga. Brazilian winger João Guilherme delivered a standout performance by scoring both goals for the visitors, handing Sporting a stunning home loss and a historic result for the visiting squad.

The match began with Académico de Viseu capitalizing early on their tactical setup, which focused on strong defensive organization and counterattacks. Guilherme opened the scoring in the 24th minute by putting away the team's first opportunity of the match, immediately putting pressure on the hosts.

Sporting attempted to respond as the match progressed into the second half. Forward Luis Suárez brought the home side level in the 62nd minute, offering a brief window for a potential comeback following a tough week that included a UEFA Champions League setback against LASK.

However, the parity lasted only briefly. Guilherme struck again in the 74th minute, securing his brace and restoring the lead for Académico de Viseu. Despite late efforts from Sporting to find another equalizer, the visitors successfully neutralized the attacking threats to preserve the scoreline.

The result marks the fifth consecutive victory for Académico de Viseu since returning to the top flight of Portuguese football this season. The win elevates the club to 17 points, placing them sixth in the standings—level with fifth-placed Arouca and just one point behind Sporting and Santa Clara.

Following the final whistle, Sporting manager Rui Borges addressed the supporters' negative reactions, which included white handkerchiefs and boos at Alvalade. Borges acknowledged that the fans' frustration is understandable given the standards of a major club, noting that daily pressure is part of the environment.

Reflecting on the team's performance, Borges pointed out that conceding the opening goal created anxiety and poor decision-making on the pitch. He emphasized that the only way to overcome the current dip in confidence and results is through diligent daily work and collective improvement.

Looking ahead, Académico de Viseu will look to extend its winning streak when it hosts Rio Ave on Sunday, November 1.
