Steam Users Locked Out by Loading User Data Issue
Thousands of gamers worldwide experienced login difficulties after getting stuck on a loading screen.
Thousands of Steam users worldwide faced unexpected login difficulties on Monday morning after becoming trapped on a persistent loading screen. The issue, which began at approximately 4:00 a.m. ET, prevented players from accessing their personal game libraries through the desktop client, the Steam Deck, and other supported devices.
Reports of the problem surged on Downdetector, with peak complaints reaching over a thousand in the United States and hundreds more in the United Kingdom, alongside global reports from countries including Japan, Spain, Germany, Indonesia, and Poland. While the main store and community pages remained operational through web browsers, the inability to open the desktop app left many users frustrated and confused about the status of recent game purchases.
The disruption appeared as a slow burn rather than a complete network outage, with the official Steam Status dashboard displaying green across the board. This pointed toward a software bug rather than a traditional server failure. Some affected individuals noted that the freezing screen occurred after purchasing, activating, or downloading a new game, while others experienced the glitch after being disconnected from specific titles like Deadlock.
Gamers took to social media platforms such as X and Reddit to share their experiences. One user lamented, "Oh so it's not just me. On my birthday too. I just wanted to play." Another shared their anxiety over a recent transaction, stating, "Weird, purchased a game (key activation) and now I have the same issue. Feels like it's got something to do with activating a game?" Others voiced concern over whether their newly purchased titles were successfully registered to their accounts while the library remained entirely locked.
Players attempted various troubleshooting methods with mixed results. While standard fixes such as reinstalling the application, changing passwords, or running the program as an administrator proved ineffective for many, some users found temporary workarounds. Suggested fixes included disconnecting the PC from the network or Wi-Fi before launching the app, or simply waiting several minutes on the loading screen for the data to eventually process.
Valve Corporation did not release an official statement or update regarding the cause of the disruption, and inquiries sent to the company by media outlets went unanswered as the morning progressed. Despite the lack of official communication, reports on Downdetector eventually began to plummet back toward baseline levels, indicating that service was gradually restoring for the majority of affected players.
