Storm Luise Brings High Winds and Heavy Rain to North Rhine-Westphalia
Meteorologists forecast severe gusts reaching up to 100 kilometers per hour, alongside periods of rain and potential thunderstorms across the region.
The German state of North Rhine-Westphalia is bracing for a significant severe weather event as Storm Luise approaches the region. Following a temporary decrease in wind speeds, weather services predict that powerful winds and stormy gusts will return on Friday, October 23. The peak of the storm is expected to arrive Friday evening and continue into the early hours of Saturday morning.
While Thursday saw cloudy skies, occasional showers, and daytime temperatures ranging between 10 and 14 degrees Celsius, the temporary calm will be short-lived. A robust low-pressure system has developed over the British Isles, setting the stage for Storm Luise to sweep across the area.
On Friday morning, south to southwest winds will intensify noticeably throughout the region. Widespread strong to stormy gusts ranging from 55 to 70 kilometers per hour are expected, while the northern edge of the central uplands and exposed locations could experience gusts between 70 and 85 kilometers per hour. High temperatures will struggle to reach 10 to 15 degrees Celsius.
Meteorological models indicate distinct regional variations as the storm progresses. The northern Lower Rhine and the northwestern Münsterland regions face the threat of severe storm gusts reaching up to 100 kilometers per hour, with a low probability of isolated hurricane-like gusts touching 105 kilometers per hour. Meanwhile, the Eifel and higher mountain areas, including the Sauerland, must also prepare for severe wind gusts.
In the city of Essen, various weather models project wind peaks between 75 and 90 kilometers per hour for Friday evening and the night into Saturday. The European ECMWF model estimates peaks at 75 kilometers per hour, the German ICON-D2 model at 78 kilometers per hour, the American GFS model at 80 kilometers per hour, and the ICON-EU model at 89 kilometers per hour. Officials note that Essen will likely avoid the highest wind speeds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour forecasted for the northern Lower Rhine and Eifel.
In addition to strong winds, Storm Luise will bring persistent rainfall and the possibility of isolated thunderstorms. In the windward western slopes of the central uplands, the German Weather Service expects precipitation to accumulate to around 30 liters per square meter within a twelve-hour period during the night into Saturday.
The combination of heavy rain and high winds poses notable hazards for outdoor work and transportation, particularly on tree-lined roads and in exposed locations where falling branches or flying debris could create dangerous conditions. After a temporary easing of the wind on Saturday afternoon, forecasts show that conditions will become breezy again on Sunday, with models calculating wind peaks between 70 and 80 kilometers per hour in Essen and potential thunderstorms arriving Sunday afternoon across North Rhine-Westphalia.
