Sunderland Held to 1-1 Draw by Lech Poznań in UEFA Europa League
Timur Tutierov scored the fastest goal of the European tournament, but missed opportunities cost Sunderland a victory in Poland.
Sunderland was held to a 1-1 draw by Lech Poznań at the INEA Stadion on Thursday evening during Matchweek 3 of the UEFA Europa League. Despite dominating large stretches of the match and registering 25 shots, the English visitors failed to capitalize on their numerous scoring chances, allowing the Polish side to fight back and secure a point.
The match began ideally for Sunderland when 21-year-old forward Timur Tutierov scored just two minutes into the contest. Capitalizing on a poor clearance by Lech goalkeeper Mateusz Lis, Nilson Angulo delivered a cross that Tutierov headed home. The strike marked the fastest goal in this season's Europa League and the first senior goal for Tutierov in a Sunderland uniform.
Fast-tracked into the first team due to injuries sidelining regular forwards Brian Brobbey and Wilson Isidor, Tutierov made only his fourth appearance for the club. Throughout the first half, Sunderland continued to pressure the hosts, with Angulo hitting the goalpost and several other attempts narrowly missing the target as they piled up 11 shots on goal.
Lech Poznań, which entered the match at the bottom of the league phase standings following 4-0 losses in its opening two European fixtures, gradually found a foothold. The Polish champions tested Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs on multiple occasions, including a dangerous double save from Radoslaw Murawski and an open-chance miss by Daniel Hakans.
The home side's persistence paid off in the 70th minute. Substitute Martin Bengtsson reacted quickest during a crowded penalty box scramble following a corner kick, firing past an unsighted Roefs at the near post to level the score at 1-1 and spark celebrations among the home crowd.
Sunderland pushed intensely for a late winner, and substitute Chris Rigg came agonizingly close in the 82nd minute when his curling 20-yard effort landed on top of the net. However, the visitors were ultimately punished for their wastefulness in front of goal.
Reflecting on the match, Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris acknowledged the competitive atmosphere and the quality of the opponent. "After the first goal, they showed they have quality to build up under pressure, to go through our block when we were a bit open. They created chances as well," Le Bris stated. He added that starting seven players under the age of 23 provided valuable high-intensity experience.
With the draw, Sunderland remains undefeated in the Europa League campaign, accumulating seven points from their first three matches, though the missed opportunity leaves them with lingering frustration after previously dropping to the bottom of the Premier League table following a recent loss to Bournemouth.
