A 17-year-old rugby player has died after suffering a severe head injury during a match in Marmande, located in the Lot-et-Garonne department of southwestern France. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, October 17, during a youth game between her club, the Union du Bassin Marmandais, and the visiting Agen Agglo Rugby team at the Georges-Dartiailh stadium.

The young athlete, identified as Cléa, played as a flanker for the Under-18 cadet team. During the run of play, she took a blow to the head and subsequently suffered a cardiac arrest. Emergency responders managed to revive her at the scene before she was airlifted to the Pellegrin University Hospital in Bordeaux. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.

The French Rugby Federation confirmed the news in an official statement, expressing profound sorrow and extending solidarity to the victim's family, teammates, and club members. "This loss shakes the entire rugby family," the federation stated, noting that an investigation is underway to establish the exact sequence of events. "Everything will be done to understand the circumstances of this accident," officials added.

The tragedy has deeply affected the local sports community and prompted discussions regarding player safety and tackling techniques. Speaking to reporters, Guillaume Jan, a coach for SU Agen, shared his sorrow over the event, stating that it deeply impacts both the sport and the younger generation. "Our children, we do not send them to sports for it to end this way. Rugby is a contact sport. It is going to be necessary to take things in hand," he said.

Jules Soulan, a fly-half for SU Agen, also emphasized the need for proper coaching standards and technical mastery in contact situations. "With coaches having little or no certification, young people no longer have the same skills in rugby. We must work on this quickly. The tackling technique must really be perfected to avoid a misfortune like this one," Soulan remarked.

In response to the tragedy, the French Rugby Federation has established a psychological support team to assist players, educators, and staff affected by the loss. The Union du Bassin Marmandais expressed gratitude to the medical teams involved in the emergency response and hospital care, noting that the club will lean on its collective strength to navigate the difficult period together.

Beyond her dedication to rugby, the teenager was also an accomplished dancer who participated in national-level competitions. Tributes poured in from various sports associations, dance schools, and local civic leaders, including Marmande Mayor Joël Hocquelet, who offered condolences to the grieving family and friends.
