A 17-year-old rugby player has died following an accident during a match over the weekend in southwestern France, the French Rugby Federation (FFR) announced on Wednesday evening. The young athlete, identified as Cléa, was a member of the Union du Bassin Marmandais club located in the Lot-et-Garonne department.

The incident occurred last Saturday during a game against a neighboring team from Agen. According to reports, the teenager suffered a head collision that led to a cardiorespiratory arrest on the pitch. Emergency responders managed to revive her at the scene before she was rushed to the Bordeaux University Hospital.

Despite medical intervention, she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The French Rugby Federation expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy through an official statement released midweek.

"This loss shakes the entire rugby family," the Federation wrote. "In these moments of great sadness, the FFR wishes to express all its support and solidarity to Cléa's family and loved ones. It also sends its most sincere thoughts to her teammates, her coaches, and all the members of the Union du Bassin Marmandais, who are struck by this terrible ordeal today."

The governing body added that a thorough investigation will take place. "Everything will be done to understand the circumstances of this accident," the FFR stated, though detailed specifics regarding the exact sequence of play have not yet been officially released.

In the wake of the tragedy, the federation has implemented psychological support services for players, staff members, and families affected by the incident. Counselors are available to help individuals cope with the emotional impact of the loss.

The tragedy has reignited discussions surrounding safety and the inherent physical risks associated with youth rugby. Past incidents, such as the 2018 death of 19-year-old Stade Français hopeful Nicolas Chauvin from cervical injuries sustained during a double tackle, have previously drawn intense scrutiny regarding player safety in younger divisions.
