Tkachuk Brothers Lead Florida Panthers in Rematch Against Skidding Winnipeg Jets
The Florida Panthers host the Winnipeg Jets on Friday night following a dominant victory earlier in the week.
The Florida Panthers will look to continue their strong momentum on Friday night as they host the Winnipeg Jets at Amerant Bank Arena. The matchup follows a decisive 5-1 victory for Florida over Winnipeg earlier in the week, concluding a four-game road trip for the Panthers.
Led by the dynamic sibling duo of Matthew and Brady Tkachuk, the Panthers enter the contest with a 7-4-2 record, placing them eighth in the Eastern Conference. Matthew Tkachuk currently paces the team with 16 assists and 20 points, while Brady Tkachuk—acquired in a June trade with the Ottawa Senators—leads the squad with eight goals and sits tied for second with 15 points.
During Tuesday's win in Winnipeg, Matthew Tkachuk notched four assists, and Brady added a goal and two assists. "Those two are special players," Panthers forward Carter Verhaeghe said. "They have a lot of brother chemistry, I guess. They make good passes to each other, and it's fun to watch."
The Panthers have achieved early-season success despite missing several key personnel due to injuries, including starting goaltender Jacob Markstrom, captain Aleksander Barkov, and veteran forward Brad Marchand. Head coach Paul Maurice has leaned heavily on his special teams to compensate for the missing lineup pieces. "Normally you want to win it 5-on-5," Maurice said, "but with some of the pieces we're missing, we need it. [The power play] has won a bunch of games for us this season."
In Markstrom's absence, goaltender Akira Schmid has stepped into the starting role. Schmid turned aside 24 of 25 shots in Tuesday's victory against the Jets and holds a 4-2-1 record this season.
Meanwhile, the Winnipeg Jets arrive in Sunrise mired in a seven-game losing streak, dropping to 4-6-3 overall after a 6-4 defeat against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday. Winnipeg has struggled to find consistency and secondary scoring behind top forwards Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, and Cole Perfetti, while goaltender Stuart Skinner attempts to anchor the net following a major roster shakeup that included trading star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck to New Jersey.
Friday's game marks the second meeting of the season between the two clubs. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET with television and streaming coverage available via ESPN+.
