Tom Skerritt, Prolific Actor Known for Alien and Top Gun, Dies at 93
The versatile performer, who won an Emmy for his role in the series Picket Fences, passed away from natural causes.
Tom Skerritt, the distinguished American actor whose career spanned over six decades of film and television, has died at the age of 93. His family confirmed that he passed away on Wednesday in Seattle due to natural causes. Known for his rugged presence and ability to portray authoritative yet nuanced characters, Skerritt left an indelible mark on Hollywood through a diverse array of memorable performances.
Born in Detroit in 1933, Skerritt initially served in the United States Air Force before pursuing his interest in filmmaking at the University of California, Los Angeles. He made his feature film debut in the 1962 Korean War drama War Hunt, which also featured a young Robert Redford. This early experience launched a prolific career that saw him transition seamlessly between supporting roles and leading parts in both television and cinema.
Skerritt gained widespread recognition for his role as Duke Forrest in the 1970 hit film M*A*S*H, directed by Robert Altman. His breakthrough in the film helped establish his reputation as a versatile actor capable of handling both comedic and dramatic material. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he appeared in several iconic projects, including the 1979 science fiction classic Alien, where he played Captain Dallas, and the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun, in which he portrayed the stern flight instructor Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf.
On the small screen, Skerritt achieved significant acclaim for his portrayal of Sheriff Jimmy Brock in the CBS drama Picket Fences. The role, which he played from 1992 to 1996, earned him an Emmy Award for outstanding lead actor in a drama series in 1993. His television work also included recurring appearances on popular shows such as Cheers, Brothers & Sisters, and The West Wing, showcasing his range as a performer.
Beyond his work in front of the camera, Skerritt was deeply committed to the craft of storytelling and the mentorship of emerging artists. He co-founded TheFilmSchool in Seattle to support the next generation of filmmakers and was a co-founder of the Red Badge Project, an initiative designed to help veterans process their experiences through writing. His family noted that he believed strongly in the power of stories to foster healing and create meaningful change.
In their statement, Skerritt’s family reflected on his life beyond his professional achievements, describing him as a man of humor, curiosity, and generosity. “While the world knew Tom through his remarkable acting career, we knew him for his humor, curiosity, wisdom, generosity and the love he brought into our lives,” they stated. He is survived by his third wife, Julie Tokashiki, as well as his five children, several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
