Emmy-Winning Actor Tom Skerritt Dies at 93
The versatile performer, known for his roles in Alien, Top Gun, and Picket Fences, passed away from natural causes.
Tom Skerritt, the distinguished American actor whose career spanned more than six decades across film and television, has died at the age of 93. His family confirmed that the actor passed away on Wednesday due to natural causes. Known for his ability to portray figures of wry authority, Skerritt became a fixture in Hollywood, leaving behind a legacy that includes iconic performances in some of the most celebrated films of the 20th century.
Born in Detroit on August 25, 1933, Skerritt served four years in the United States Air Force before pursuing a career in the arts. He attended Wayne State University and later the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied filmmaking. His interest in cinema was sparked by the classic film Citizen Kane, setting him on a path that would eventually lead to a prolific acting career.
Skerritt made his film debut in the 1962 Korean War drama War Hunt, a production that also featured the early work of Robert Redford, Sydney Pollack, and Francis Ford Coppola. Although he initially struggled to secure consistent screen time, his career gained significant momentum with roles in M.A.S.H. and The Turning Point. The latter earned him a National Board of Review award, solidifying his reputation as a reliable and talented character actor.
The actor reached international prominence in 1979 with his role as Captain Dallas in Ridley Scott’s science fiction classic Alien. Skerritt later noted that he was drawn to the script because the lead character eventually disappears, allowing the female protagonist to emerge as the hero. He followed this success with a memorable turn as Commander Mike 'Viper' Metcalf in the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun, where he served as a mentor to Tom Cruise’s character.
On television, Skerritt achieved perhaps his most significant critical acclaim as Sheriff Jimmy Brock in the drama series Picket Fences. The role earned him an Emmy Award for outstanding lead actor in a drama series in 1993. Over the course of his career, he also appeared in numerous other television projects, including Cheers, Brothers & Sisters, and Leverage, while also making his Broadway debut in 2013.
Reflecting on his career in a 1997 interview with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Skerritt described himself as a character actor trapped in the body of a leading man. He embraced this duality, noting that it allowed him to successfully navigate both television and feature films. Beyond his acting work, he was a dedicated supporter of the arts, helping to establish TheFilmSchool in Seattle to mentor new generations of filmmakers.
In a statement released to the public, Skerritt’s family paid tribute to his personal character, noting that while the world knew him for his acting, they remembered him for his humor, curiosity, wisdom, and generosity. The family emphasized his deep commitment to storytelling, service, and his love for the natural world. Skerritt is survived by his third wife, Julie Tokashiki, and his five children.
