Tom Skerritt, Star of Alien and Top Gun, Passes Away at 93
The acclaimed American character actor and Emmy Award winner died of natural causes at his home.
Tom Skerritt, the versatile American actor known for his memorable roles in major cinematic hits such as Alien and Top Gun, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 93. His family announced the death in a statement, noting that he died of natural causes. Although he was celebrated worldwide for his extensive acting career, his family remembered him for his personal qualities, stating, "While the world knew Tom through his remarkable acting career, we knew him for his humor, curiosity, wisdom, generosity, and the love he brought into our lives."
Born in Detroit, Michigan, on August 25, 1933, Skerritt served in the United States Air Force before pursuing higher education and transitioning into acting. He made his feature film debut in the 1962 war drama War Hunt alongside Robert Redford, marking the beginning of a prolific career that spanned more than 150 acting credits across television and film. Throughout the decades, he built a reputation as a reliable and dynamic performer who could effortlessly move between leading and supporting roles.
His breakthrough came with Robert Altman's satirical dark comedy M*A*S*H in 1970, where he played the army surgeon Duke Forrest. This led to iconic roles in subsequent years, including Captain Arthur Dallas, the ill-fated commander of the Nostromo in Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi classic Alien. He later reached a new generation of filmgoers in 1986 as Commander Mike "Viper" Metcalf, the flight instructor guiding Tom Cruise in Tony Scott's blockbuster Top Gun.
Skerritt also left a significant mark on television, most notably through his critically acclaimed portrayal of Sheriff Jimmy Brock in the CBS drama series Picket Fences. His work on the show earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1993. Over a four-year run from 1992 to 1996, the series became celebrated for its eccentric small-town setting and strong writing, with Skerritt anchoring the cast alongside co-star Kathy Baker.
Beyond his major genre films, Skerritt enjoyed a rich filmography that included roles in The Turning Point, A River Runs Through It directed by his lifelong friend Robert Redford, Steel Magnolias, and Contact. A writer once described him as a character actor locked in a leading man's body, a compliment he often embraced. In later years, he expanded his stage work, making his Broadway debut in a 2013 adaptation of John Grisham's A Time to Kill.
Away from the screen, Skerritt dedicated much of his time to education and community service. He helped establish TheFilmSchool in Seattle to train aspiring filmmakers and co-founded the Red Badge Project, an initiative utilizing storytelling and writing to assist military veterans dealing with post-traumatic stress and depression. Drawing on his own four years of service in the Air Force, he frequently spoke about the therapeutic power of narrative.
Skerritt is survived by his third wife, Julie Tokashiki, whom he married in 1998, as well as his five children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Family members stated that information regarding memorial services will be shared at a later date, leaving behind a lasting legacy in both American entertainment and veteran support.
