Trieste Stuns Virtus Bologna as Armani Milano Defeats Cantu in Serie A
Virtus Bologna loses its unbeaten record to Trieste while Olimpia Milano secures a victory over winless Cantu in the Italian basketball league.
The sixth round of the Italian Serie A basketball championship delivered major shifts at the top of the standings, highlighted by Virtus Bologna suffering its first defeat of the season. Bologna dropped its unblemished record following an intense 100-93 loss to Trieste at the PalaDozza on Monday.
Despite building a nine-point lead by halftime, Virtus could not contain a surging Trieste side that erupted for 31 points in the third quarter. Former Varese players spearheaded the comeback for the visitors, with Sean McDermott scoring 23 points and grabbing eight rebounds, while Colbey Ross contributed 18 points and six assists, including a clutch basket late in the game against Hackett. Galloway added 24 points and Jones scored 21 to complete the impressive performance.
With the defeat, Virtus Bologna now shares the league lead with a 10-point total alongside Napoli and Treviso. For the visiting Trieste squad, the victory elevated their standing significantly as they continue to pressure the upper tier of the table.
Meanwhile, Olimpia Armani Milano maintained strong momentum by defeating local rivals Cantu in a hard-fought matchup at Desio. Milano triumphed despite missing Semaj Christon, who was sidelined just hours before tip-off following a positive drug test after a previous game against Napoli.
Acqua San Bernardo Cantu stayed competitive through the first half, powered by 16 points from Moretti, but Milano gradually pulled away in the second half. Five players reached double figures for coach Peppe Poeta's squad, with Cole and Bolmaro each contributing 14 points. The loss leaves Cantu at the bottom of the standings with zero points after six games.
Following these latest results, the Serie A standings feature an unusual three-way tie at the summit between Virtus Bologna, Napoli, and Treviso with 10 points each. Milano sits closely behind with eight points, sharing that tier with Maxima Roma and Varese, while the lower ranks see intense battles as teams fight to climb out of the danger zone.
