Union Defeats Estudiantes 2-1 in Argentine Professional League

Union earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Estudiantes de La Plata on Monday, October 26, 2026, during the 14th round of the Argentine Professional League. The match took place at the Estadio 15 de Abril in the Province of Santa Fe, with Pablo Dóvalo serving as the referee.

The visiting side opened the scoring in the first half when Lucas Ayala accidentally turned the ball into his own net in the 40th minute, giving Estudiantes a 1-0 advantage before halftime. Despite controlling large portions of possession during the opening period, Estudiantes went into the break ahead largely due to the defensive mishap.

Union responded strongly in the second half under manager Leonardo Madelón. Cristian Tarragona tied the match at 1-1 in the 51st minute with a precise right-footed shot into the top left corner, assisted by a cross from Juan Pintado.

The turnaround was completed in the 64th minute when Marcelo Estigarribia scored Union's second goal. Estigarribia converted from the center of the area with a left-footed strike to put the hosts ahead 2-1, a lead they successfully defended for the remainder of the contest.

Tactical adjustments and substitutions marked the latter stages of the game as both managers attempted to alter the momentum. Estudiantes brought on players including Lucas Alario, Alexis Castro, Brian Aguirre, and Benjamin Sagues Barreiro, while Union utilized substitutes such as Mauro Luna Diale, Juan Pintado, and Eric Ramírez to maintain their defensive shape and secure the three points.

Statistically, Estudiantes dominated possession with over 64 percent of the ball and completed 460 passes compared to Union's 244. However, Union was clinical in the attacking third, registering 14 total shots with five on target, while Estudiantes managed 13 shots with four on target.

With this result, both teams continue their campaigns in the Argentine Professional League, where positioning remains critical for playoff qualification and annual table standings that determine continental tournament berths.

The match officials included assistant referees Cristian Navarro and Lucas Ripoli, fourth official Martín Desposito, and video assistant referee Fernando Espinoza alongside assistant VAR Leandro Villanueva.
