VfL Bochum produced an inspired performance in the second round of the DFB-Pokal, earning a 2-0 victory over top-flight opponent 1. FSV Mainz 05 to punch their ticket to the round of 16. Despite facing a team from the Bundesliga, Bochum stood toe-to-toe with their visitors, executing a disciplined defensive game plan and capitalizing on second-half opportunities to eliminate their higher-tier rivals.

Following a tight and scoreless first half, the home side broke the deadlock immediately after the intermission. In the 46th minute, Gerrit Holtmann set up Christian Rasmussen, whose strike took an unfortunate deflection off Mainz player Sano and found the back of the net. The unexpected deflection left the Mainz defense stunned just moments into the second half.

Bochum maintained their composure and effectively sealed the contest in the 75th minute through a clinical counterattack. Mansour Ouro-Tagba launched the transition by pushing a pass through to Jarne Steuckers, who then squared the ball across to Philipp Hofmann. Hofmann made no mistake with the opportunity, doubling Bochum's lead and putting the contest out of reach.

Mainz struggled to generate meaningful danger throughout the match despite enjoying periods of possession. The Bundesliga side found it difficult to unlock Bochum's organized defensive structure and rarely threatened to overturn the deficit. One of Mainz's clearest chances arrived from a set piece in the 71st minute, but Paul Nebel sent his free kick over the crossbar, leaving the visitors scoreless.

The result continues Bochum's mastery over Mainz in cup action, having now won all three of the historical DFB-Pokal encounters between the clubs. For Bochum and head coach Rösler, the win secures a spot in the round of 16 for the second consecutive season. In contrast, the loss marks the fourth straight year that Mainz has failed to reach the round of 16 in the competition.

Elsewhere in cup play, RB Leipzig narrowly averted an upset by securing a 2-1 away victory against third-tier Rot-Weiss Essen. Essen seized an early lead in the ninth minute when Lucas Brumme scored following a short backpass from Castello Lukeba that caused goalkeeper Örjan Nyland to slip. Leipzig's challenge deepened when Nicolas Seiwald was sent off in the 44th minute with a second yellow card for fouling Ruben Reisig. Despite the disadvantage, substitute Christoph Baumgartner salvaged the match for coach Martín Demichelis, equalizing in the 78th minute from Antonio Nusa's cross and heading in the winner off a David Raum free kick four minutes later.

In other tournament fixtures, FC Augsburg advanced to the round of 16 with a 4-2 win over SG Sonnenhof Großaspach, surviving a blown two-goal advantage thanks to a pair of goals from Rodrigo Ribeiro. Eintracht Frankfurt earned a 3-1 road win over Hamburger SV behind goals from Robin Koch, Jonathan Burkardt, and Younes Ebnoutalib, with Terem Moffi providing Hamburg's lone response. Meanwhile, 1. FC Köln built a 3-0 advantage over Union Berlin, powered by 20-year-old Saïd El Mala, who tallied two goals and assisted Linton Maina.
