Audi junior Freddie Slater is set to make his official Formula 1 weekend debut later this season by participating in Free Practice 1 sessions at the Mexican and Brazilian grands prix. The announcement follows a strong rookie campaign in Formula 3, where the 18-year-old Briton finished as runner-up and highest-ranked rookie behind champion Ugo Ugochukwu.

As part of Audi's driver development program, Slater will fulfill the team's mandatory young-driver practice requirements. He will take over the car from regular drivers during the two upcoming race weekends, replacing Nico Hulkenberg in Mexico City and Gabriel Bortoleto in Sao Paulo.

Reflecting on the milestone, Slater expressed his excitement about driving a Formula 1 car during a Grand Prix weekend. "Getting behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car at a grand prix weekend is a big moment for me and something I've been dreaming of since I was a kid," Slater stated. He added that his primary focus will be supporting the team's program and gathering essential data.

Audi racing director Allan McNish emphasized that the timing is ideal for the young driver to advance. "We have seen Freddie making great progress throughout recent years, both on and off the track; it is the right time for Freddie to step up," McNish said. He noted that the upcoming practice runs will provide crucial experience before Slater transitions to Formula 2 next year with Invicta.

Slater's promotion is part of Audi's ongoing preparations for the German brand's official entry into Formula 1 in 2026, following its takeover of the Sauber team. Earlier in the current season, Alpine junior Paul Aron also completed practice outings for Audi as part of the team's evaluation process.

The announcement coincided with activities ahead of the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. During the Austin weekend, Cadillac test and development driver Colton Herta is also scheduled to participate in an opening practice session, driving the car normally handled by Sergio Perez.
