NASCAR Mourns Passing of Lloyd Garner, Mentor and Spotter for Corey Heim
The stock car community honors the beloved short-track mentor following his battle with cancer.
The NASCAR community is in mourning following the passing of respected spotter and mentor Lloyd Garner after a difficult battle with cancer, prompting drivers and garage personnel to reflect on his lasting impact on the sport. Garner was particularly instrumental in the development of NASCAR standout Corey Heim, serving as a trusted guide from Heim's early days on local short tracks through the ARCA ranks and his rise through professional stock car competition.
Heim consistently acknowledged the vital role Garner played throughout his racing career. Ahead of the 2026 ValleyStar Credit Union 300, Heim expressed his deep gratitude for Garner's mentorship from the spotters stand. "He's the man. He's a big part of my development," Heim said. "You know, he spotted me all the way through my beginning in late models and did some ARCA with me as well." One defining moment came at Cordele Speedway in 2020, where Garner repeatedly guided Heim with vital calls of "Crossover!" to help him secure an ARCA victory.
Tributes quickly arrived from across the garage, illustrating the immense respect Garner earned across different levels of racing. Fellow spotter Freddie Kraft shared a brief and heartfelt message, stating, "Rest in peace Big Buddy." Racing personality Mamba Smith also remembered Garner, describing him as one of the most passionate short-track competitors and spotlighting the impressive list of drivers he guided over the years.
Colleagues noted that Garner brought a unique combination of personal warmth and professional skill to the racetrack. Matt Weaver reflected on Garner's supportive nature, remembering him as a thoughtful individual who brought undeniable energy to the garage. "Lloyd Garner was such a good dude, man. He was always thoughtful and kind. He was a total vibe at all times," Weaver wrote. "He's won with more big names than you'd realize. Drivers loved and trusted having him in their ear. Rest easy, big man."
The spotter role demands continuous focus, split-second evaluation, and clear direction to help a driver navigate heavy traffic and avoid trouble under conditions of limited visibility. Garner built strong personal bonds that enhanced that on-track communication. Kip Childress emphasized that Garner's mentorship went far beyond the cockpit, writing, "Throughout his time in the garage and the spotters stand, Lloyd was able to help guide so many who have reached the highest level of our sport. Not just drivers…anyone and everyone. Our sport is better because of Lloyd…I am better because of him too."
Away from the speedway, Garner and his family spent months coping with severe health challenges. His sister, Angela Medina, created a GoFundMe fundraiser on September 30, 2026, seeking assistance with medical treatments, prescription drugs, transportation, and regular household expenses following a diagnosis of cancer that had spread throughout his body.
In the period leading up to Garner's death, Medina shared emotional updates describing the family's efforts to ensure he received urgent care as his condition deteriorated. In one update, she detailed taking Garner to the emergency room, expressing frustration over waiting hours while he needed vital medical support, and attempting repeatedly to contact his oncologist. Hours later, she confirmed that hospice services had been contacted and were arriving to assist the family.
Garner's passing leaves an enduring void across the American stock car landscape. Although his voice is no longer heard over team communications, his legacy remains embedded in the careers of the competitors he shaped, most notably Heim, who continues his racing career with the lessons instilled by his longtime friend and spotter.
