Kyle Larson Eyes Title Clinch at Martinsville After Thrilling Talladega Victory
NASCAR upheld Larson's maiden superspeedway win following a review, setting up a championship match point at the Virginia short track.
Kyle Larson heads to Martinsville Speedway this weekend positioned to secure his third NASCAR Cup Series championship after officials upheld his dramatic victory in Sunday's YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. The Hendrick Motorsports driver navigated through traffic on the final lap to edge teammate William Byron by just 0.041 seconds, securing his first career superspeedway win and opening a massive 73-point cushion at the top of the standings.
The victory capped a wild final lap in which Larson briefly looked out of contention. After relinquishing the lead and dropping as low as 11th place with half a lap remaining, the No. 5 Chevrolet charged through the tri-oval, passing Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and driving past seven competitors in the final quarter-mile. Speaking on the "Dale Jr. Download" podcast hosted by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Larson admitted his immediate frustration after sliding back in the pack, thinking he had surrendered what would have been his easiest superspeedway win before finding a seam back to the front.
Following the checkered flag, Larson's winning move drew scrutiny over whether his car violated NASCAR's double-yellow line rule, which bars drivers from dropping below the line to advance their position. NASCAR Cup Series Managing Director Brad Moran confirmed that officials reviewed multiple camera angles around the track before deciding against a penalty. Moran explained that a violation requires both left-side tires to be clearly below the yellow line, concluding that Larson's Chevrolet remained on the boundary rather than beneath it.
Moran also addressed other close-quarter moves during the chaotic finish, including incidents involving the No. 1 and No. 77 cars near Turn 4. Officials deemed those actions legal under an accident avoidance allowance, noting that the No. 34 car had moved down the track and created a potential hazard. Moran emphasized that NASCAR accounted for the high-intensity racing of the final lap while ensuring drivers did not intentionally drive out of bounds to make passes.
With the win confirmed, Larson extended his championship advantage from five points to 73 over second-place Denny Hamlin. Larson now sits at 2,441 points, while Hamlin follows at 2,368. Christopher Bell trails by 74 points, Chase Briscoe faces a 79-point deficit, Joey Logano sits 100 points back, and Ryan Blaney remains 107 points behind the leader. With two races left in the postseason, Larson can mathematically clinch the title on Sunday by scoring 59 points at Martinsville, regardless of other drivers' finishes.
The dominance marks Larson's third victory in the 2026 Chase, having previously won at World Wide Technology Raceway and Kansas Speedway. Reflecting on the ten-race format during an appearance on "Kevin Harvick's Happy Hour," Larson noted that the postseason structure tests sustained excellence across tracks. While Hamlin entered the postseason as the regular-season champion, Larson's surge across multiple venues has shifted momentum firmly into the hands of the No. 5 team.
Despite Larson's commanding position, the half-mile oval at Martinsville presents a final hurdle before the championship concludes at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Rivals such as Hamlin, who boasts six career wins at "The Paperclip," and Team Penske's Ryan Blaney and Joey Logano have historically excelled at the Virginia short track. Any of those contenders could capture the checkered flag on Sunday, forcing the title fight to a final showdown next week.
