Kyle Larson Wins Wild YellaWood 500 at Talladega After Late Red-Flag Crash
The NASCAR Cup Series event at Talladega Superspeedway featured a dramatic 15-car pileup that sent Joey Logano's car airborne before Kyle Larson secured the victory.
The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season continued on Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway with the YellaWood 500, a high-stakes 188-lap race that concluded with a dramatic victory for Kyle Larson. Larson battled on the final lap of the 2.66-mile oval in Alabama to grab the race win and extend his lead in the championship standings with just two races remaining before the season finale.
The 500-mile race was marked by multiple significant incidents that heavily impacted championship contenders. Early in the event during the first green flag stop, Christopher Bell spun out coming to pit lane, clipped the inside wall, and spent several laps undergoing repairs. Later in the race, a major crash toward the end of stage two collected nearly half of the playoff drivers, including Ryan Blaney, Denny Hamlin, Bubba Wallace, Chase Elliott, Daniel Suarez, Tyler Reddick, and Ryan Preece.
The most dramatic moment of the afternoon occurred with just five laps remaining, when a 15-car pileup brought out a red flag stoppage. Three-time Cup Series champion Joey Logano lost control on the frontstretch after receiving a push from Carson Hocevar, sending his No. 22 Ford airborne and landing upside down on its roof. Safety crews worked for several minutes to turn the vehicle back over on its wheels, allowing Logano to climb out unaided to cheers from the crowd.
Reflecting on the terrifying crash, Logano likened the experience to a movie moment. "I just got a push in the wrong spot there," Logano said. "It was very much a 'Talladega Nights,' 'Oh no, I'm upside down, this is not good' moment. I can't thank the safety crew enough. They did an amazing job flipping that thing over."
Logano, who has a history of airborne accidents at the infamous superspeedway, praised the structural integrity of his car compared to previous incidents. In the April 2021 race at Talladega, he previously voiced frustration over a crushed roll bar near his head. Following Sunday's wreck, he expressed relief regarding modern NASCAR safety enhancements. "The car did a great job," Logano said. "The last time I flipped it was crushed on my head. This time, I don't think any of the roll cage crushed at all... Just happy to be alive."
The multi-car wreck also collected Riley Herbst, whose Toyota appeared to lose brakes before hitting the inside wall at full speed. Herbst, who missed the August race at Daytona due to a concussion from a crash at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, exited his vehicle with assistance and was later seen with a soft cast on his left hand and a wrap around his wrist. "I'm OK; it was a big one," Herbst said, expressing gratitude to his team and acknowledging the physical toll of the sport.
With the conclusion of the dramatic event in Alabama, the updated playoff standings place Kyle Larson at the top, followed by Denny Hamlin trailing by 73 points and Christopher Bell sitting 74 points back. Chase Briscoe, Joey Logano, Ryan Blaney, and Tyler Reddick round out the top contenders in the standings.
Following the conclusion of the YellaWood 500, the NASCAR Cup Series heads to Martinsville Speedway on November 1. The season will officially conclude with the championship race at Homestead-Miami Speedway on November 8.
