Bad Weather and Road Closures Disrupt Events and Traffic in Schwandorf

Recent rain dampened a traditional local market, while police arrested a reckless driver and major roadwork began in the region.

Schwandorf experienced a weekend of mixed weather and major disruptions as the traditional All Saints' Market faced heavy rainfall, compelling organizers and merchants to adapt. Formerly known as 'Mantelsonntag,' the annual event draws shoppers looking to acquire winter clothing and seasonal items. However, persistent rain and dreary conditions on Sunday kept the crowds relatively sparse along Friedrich-Ebert-Straße and eliminated the usual outdoor market stalls entirely.

Despite the adverse conditions, several local businesses reported steady foot traffic as shoppers sought shelter inside retail shops. Store owners along the main commercial areas noted that customers actively browsed for indoor and outdoor winter gear, such as winter jackets, hiking boots, and seasonal literature. Meanwhile, local gardeners enjoyed strong sales near the Konrad-Max-Kunz Glockenspiel, successfully marketing grave arrangements, while daily-necessity vendors suffered from the poor weather.

The region also saw dramatic law enforcement activity early Monday morning when a 30-year-old man fled from a police checkpoint in Schwandorf. According to police officer Stefan Dirnberger, the suspect initially approached a 23-year-old woman at a gas station on Wackersdorfer Straße before speeding away through the town without headlights at speeds reaching roughly 75 mph. The ensuing high-speed chase extended onto the A93 highway, with speeds touching 125 mph, before multiple police patrols and a helicopter successfully intercepted and arrested the suspect near Regensburg.

Authorities confirmed that the fleeing driver did not possess a driver's license and showed signs of alcohol consumption. Police officers subjected him to a blood test and transferred him to an appropriate facility following his arrest. The vehicle was secured, and several police units from Regensburg, Burglengenfeld, and Schwandorf coordinated the pursuit.

In addition to the weekend market and the highway pursuit, motorists in the Schwandorf district face significant infrastructure challenges starting Monday, November 2, 2026. The State Construction Office Amberg-Sulzbach initiated a complete closure of the St 2397 state road between Burglengenfeld and Maxhütte-Haidhof to facilitate extensive pavement rehabilitation work.

The complete road closure affects a 1.7-mile section southeast of Burglengenfeld where the asphalt surface, dating back over twenty years, has suffered considerable damage. The project is expected to last approximately five weeks, finishing in early December, with an estimated cost of roughly one million euros funded by the Free State of Bavaria.

While the direct route between the Burglengenfeld southern bypass and Birkenhöhe remains completely blocked in both directions, officials noted that access from the bypass directly into downtown Burglengenfeld stays open. Motorists traveling through the area are instructed to follow marked detours utilizing local county roads SAD 8 and SAD 5 via Maxhütte-Haidhof while authorities complete the necessary road surface and drainage repairs.
