Scams, Frost Warnings, and Road Closures Impact Saalfeld-Rudolstadt
Residents face phone scams resulting in massive losses, an official frost warning, and a brief intersection closure in Rudolstadt.
The Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district has experienced a busy period marked by financial fraud targeting older adults, an official weather warning for frost, and local infrastructure maintenance.
Local law enforcement issued urgent warnings after phone fraudsters swindled older residents out of approximately 85,000 euros in cash and gold. Using aggressive psychological pressure, scammers posed as police officers, doctors, or relatives involved in severe accidents to fabricate emergencies and demand immediate financial bailouts.
In at least two successful scams across Saalfeld and Rudolstadt, victims handed over roughly 75,000 euros in cash, alongside gold coins valued at more than 10,000 euros. Investigators noted that total losses could have been higher had a vigilant family member not intervened and stopped another handover in the nick of time.
Police reminded residents that neither law enforcement agencies nor medical facilities ever request money, gold, or bail payments over the telephone. Authorities recommend immediately hanging up on suspicious calls and verifying any concerns by dialing the official emergency number or contacting family members directly through known private numbers.
In addition to the crime wave, residents faced challenging weather conditions as the German Weather Service issued an official level-one frost warning for the region. Temperatures dropped between zero and minus two degrees Celsius, posing risks of frost damage across numerous local municipalities including Rudolstadt, Saalfeld, Bad Blankenburg, and surrounding communities.
Infrastructure projects have also caused disruptions in Rudolstadt, where a key intersection is scheduled for a three-day closure. Utility work involving water supply and canal installations by local utility providers will shut down vehicle traffic at the intersection of Am Bahndamm and Zeigerheimer Street.
The temporary closure will remain in effect daily from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, blocking all vehicular access and preventing residents from driving into or out of the immediate construction zone. Local authorities coordinated the restrictions with emergency services to ensure fire and rescue operations remain unaffected during the work before the intersection is repaved with asphalt and reopened.
