Barnes and Barrett Spark Raptors to 129-99 Blowout Win Over Depleted Magic
Scottie Barnes scored 28 points and RJ Barrett added 25 as Toronto capitalized on an injury-riddled Orlando lineup.
The Toronto Raptors secured a commanding 129-99 victory over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night at Scotiabank Arena. Driven by high-energy performances from Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett, Toronto seized full control of the matchup to improve to 3-1 on the young season, handing Orlando its third loss in four games in the opener of a two-game set in Canada.
Barnes bounced back emphatically after a scoreless outing against Minnesota on Sunday, finishing Wednesday's contest with 28 points, six rebounds, and four assists. The forward delivered one of the night's most electrifying highlights during the third quarter, tracking down an outlet pass from Barrett on a fast break before finishing with a dynamic 360 dunk. Barrett proved equally formidable on the wing, tallying 25 points, nine rebounds, and six assists.
Toronto produced the lopsided win despite playing without veteran star Kawhi Leonard, who watched from off the bench as he manages swelling in his left knee. Rookie Ja’Kobe Walter filled the starting spot in Leonard's absence, recording 14 points and five rebounds. Meanwhile, backup point guard Jamal Shead provided a major spark off the bench, dishing out seven assists and scoring 13 points to keep Toronto's offense operating smoothly.
For Orlando, missing several critical rotation pieces proved too difficult to overcome. The Magic were without leading scorer Paolo Banchero due to an ankle injury and starting guard Jalen Suggs, who sustained a knee injury in their recent win over the New York Knicks. Orlando was also missing Jonathan Isaac, Noah Penda, and Izaiyah Nelson, severely limiting their depth and lineup versatility throughout the contest.
Reserve forward Tristan da Silva stepped forward to lead the Magic with a team-high 20 points, maintaining an assertive approach despite the team's offensive woes. Franz Wagner took on added ball-handling and playmaking duties, concluding his evening with 15 points, five assists, and four rebounds. However, an early run by Orlando dissipated quickly near the end of the first quarter as Toronto's defensive pressure began to dictate the tempo.
Following the loss, Orlando's Sean Sweeney highlighted ball security and communication as key factors in the defeat. Sweeney acknowledged that turnovers completely undermined the Magic's offensive flow, particularly when Toronto converted multiple late steals in the first half into transition points. He also pointed to defensive breakdowns, noting that a lack of physicality allowed Toronto to repeatedly attack the paint with little resistance.
Sweeney also addressed the team's ongoing search for functional lineup combinations as the coaching staff attempted to stop Toronto's scoring bursts. While guard Jase Richardson was limited in the first half after picking up three quick fouls, Sweeney praised Richardson's resilience and improved ball-handling under duress in the second half. Sweeney similarly commended da Silva's aggressiveness, citing it as an encouraging sign amidst a difficult road loss.
Dominance on the glass further tilted the contest in Toronto's favor, with the Raptors repeatedly creating second-chance scoring opportunities. Sweeney stressed that Orlando must urgently correct its defensive rebounding fundamentals, particularly focusing on making contact, boxing out, and securing loose possessions. The Magic will have a quick chance to apply those lessons, as both teams face off again on Friday night at Scotiabank Arena in an NBA Cup matchup.
