Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was hospitalized on Friday afternoon after collapsing at the club's Säbener Straße training ground. A rescue helicopter landed at the facility before the 40-year-old Belgian manager was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Munich, according to reports from German media outlet BILD and other sources.

The medical emergency follows a week in which Kompany battled a severe viral infection. The illness had previously caused him significant physical discomfort, including leg pain, difficulties climbing stairs, and complications involving old scar tissue. During Bayern's 6-1 victory over RB Leipzig, the coach was reportedly forced to rest in his office and managed parts of the match from a seated position in the dugout.

Despite being unwell, Kompany continued to work and oversaw Bayern's 2-2 Champions League draw against Arsenal. Following the match, he admitted to reporters that he had ignored his body's warning signs. "I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn't listen to my body, and at a certain point, my body said: Stop now!" Kompany stated.

In an official statement released on Friday afternoon, the club confirmed that Kompany had to seek medical treatment after collapsing during training for FC Bayern's second team, a session he had been observing. The club stated that he would undergo a thorough examination and remain under medical care, with his coaching staff stepping in to manage training and match operations in the interim.

Prior to Friday's incident, Kompany had already missed several training sessions on Monday and Tuesday ahead of the European fixture, with assistant coach Aaron Danks stepping in to handle media duties. Danks noted during a press conference that persuading the manager to rest had proved challenging, as Kompany consistently wanted to fulfill all of his coaching responsibilities.

The medical emergency creates further uncertainty for the German champions as they prepare to face SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday. Bayern currently sits undefeated at the top of the domestic league table, level with Borussia Dortmund, while holding the fourteenth position in the Champions League standings. It remains unclear whether Kompany will be able to return to the touchline for the weekend fixture, or if his assistant coaches will continue to lead the squad.

This health scare is the second major medical emergency Bayern Munich has faced this season, following an incident during the preseason when a midfielder experienced a neurological dysfunction on the pitch. The club has not yet released a detailed subsequent medical bulletin regarding Kompany's exact condition, though reports indicate he is currently in a stable state.
