Mainz 05 Seeks First Home Win, Bayern Munich Coach Kompany Hospitalized
As FSV Mainz 05 prepares to face Werder Bremen, FC Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany remains under medical observation following a collapse.
German football is dealing with contrasting storylines this week as the Bundesliga prepares for its upcoming fixtures, highlighted by Mainz 05 seeking their first home victory in six months and serious health concerns surrounding Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany.
FSV Mainz 05 will host Werder Bremen on Saturday at a sold-out arena, aiming to break a lengthy home winless streak. Despite sitting fifth in the table after six matchdays, Mainz has struggled significantly on home turf, earning just one point from their last six league matches at home. Their last home victory dates back to March 22 against Eintracht Frankfurt. However, the team has excelled on the road, recently setting a club record with their fifth consecutive away victory by defeating Schalke 1-0.
Mainz head coach Urs Fischer remains calm regarding his squad's home struggles. Describing the upcoming match in his characteristic dry manner as simply the 'next opportunity, next chance,' Fischer emphasized the importance of staying positive. 'I think it is important that you try to approach it positively. We will try it one more time,' the 60-year-old Swiss coach said.
Defender Danny da Costa echoed his manager's sentiment, noting that the team must clear their heads of recent home disappointments and focus on basics like aggression and intensity. Mainz will rely heavily in-form striker Phillip Tietz, who has scored five goals this season. Tietz sits second in the league's goalscoring chart, trailing Werder Bremen's returning forward Niclas Füllkrug by just one goal in what media have dubbed the 'duel of the nines.'
Meanwhile, reigning German champions FC Bayern Munich are facing major concerns off the pitch. Head coach Vincent Kompany was hospitalized via an emergency ambulance following a collapse while watching a training session of the Bayern reserves. The club announced that the 40-year-old Belgian is undergoing detailed medical examinations and will remain in medical care.
'The health of Vincent Kompany is our highest priority. We will do everything at FC Bayern to ensure he recovers quickly,' said board member for sport Max Eberl. Bayern confirmed that Kompany's coaching staff will take over his responsibilities in the interim.
Kompany had been battling a severe viral infection and hip problems in recent weeks. Despite his illness, he managed to coach his team from the sidelines during their 2-2 Champions League draw against Arsenal, having already felt unwell during a 6-1 league victory over RB Leipzig where he was forced to watch much of the match from a seated position and rest on a sofa during halftime.
