Car Crash, Jail Sentence, and Early Sunset Mark News in Saxony
Recent events in the region include a serious traffic accident near Görlitz, a swift prison sentence for a repeat offender, and daylight hours shrinking ahead of standard time.
A series of notable incidents unfolded across Saxony, drawing attention to local police reports, judicial actions, and seasonal shifts. On Thursday morning, a major traffic accident occurred on federal highway B115 near Kodersdorf, close to Görlitz. According to the Görlitz police department, a black Ford Fiesta driven by a 38-year-old individual suddenly veered off the road and crashed into a roadside tree. The driver sustained severe injuries and was transported to a hospital by emergency medical services.
The collision prompted a full closure of the B115 immediately following the crash. Authorities later reopened the road to one-way traffic before completing accident clearance and vehicle recovery by around noon, fully restoring transit. A police spokesperson estimated the material damage resulting from the crash to be approximately 10,000 euros. The exact cause of why the vehicle veered off the roadway remains under investigation.
In a separate law enforcement development, the Local Court of Görlitz sentenced a 58-year-old Polish national to six months in prison without parole in an expedited proceeding. The ruling, handed down on Wednesday, followed three independent offenses involving violations of the Freedom of Movement Act. The defendant had previously been deported in 2020 and barred from re-entry by immigration authorities.
Federal police detained the man at the Görlitz train station on Sunday after he arrived by train for the first time, initiating deportation proceedings back to Poland. Despite being returned across the border, the individual reappeared at the station on Monday following a shoplifting report. Although he had already paid for consumed ice cream specialties, officers filed new charges and carried out a second deportation.
During the second removal, the intoxicated man allegedly told federal police officers that he would return immediately, a threat he realized roughly an hour later when he was spotted once again at the Görlitz station. Following consultation with the Görlitz public prosecutor's office, authorities fast-tracked the case to the local court, leading directly to the six-month prison sentence and his transfer to the Görlitz correctional facility.
Meanwhile, residents in the region are preparing for the end of daylight saving time, which brings earlier sunsets across Germany. On Sunday, clocks will be turned back one hour from 3:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m., returning the country to standard Central European Time. Because of the Earth's eastward rotation, sunset times vary notably by location within the same time zone.
On the first day of winter time, the sun will set in Görlitz at 4:47 p.m., while in Aachen, situated further west, daylight will last until 5:23 p.m. While evenings will grow darker much earlier, mornings will experience a corresponding shift toward earlier sunrises across the country as the seasonal transition takes effect.
