A 44-year-old passenger is recovering in a hospital after spending nearly 20 hours in open water following an incident aboard Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas. The woman, a citizen of El Salvador, went overboard in the Ionian Sea on Friday, October 9, while the mega ship was sailing from Mykonos, Greece, to Naples, Italy.

According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, a passing cargo ship named the MSC Rossella III spotted a flashing light attached to a life ring approximately 70 to 83 miles southwest of Zakynthos in the early hours of Saturday, October 10. A Hellenic Coast Guard rescue vessel quickly approached the area, recovered the conscious woman, and provided her with initial medical aid.

Footage released by maritime authorities captured the rescue operation in the dark waters, showing crew members throwing a rope to bring the passenger safely aboard. She was subsequently transported to the port of Katakolo on the Greek mainland and taken by ambulance to a hospital in nearby Pyrgos, where she received treatment for hypothermia and underwent medical evaluations.

The emergency response was massive, involving the cruise ship itself, multiple coast guard vessels, and a Hellenic Air Force helicopter. Passengers reported seeing the 167,704-gross-ton vessel repeatedly circling the search area throughout Friday as crew members worked alongside authorities to locate the missing individual.

Royal Caribbean confirmed the rescue efforts in a statement, noting that the company immediately launched a search and rescue operation and worked closely with local authorities. The cruise line added that its Care Team was actively supporting the guest's family during the ordeal, while declining to share additional details to protect the privacy of those involved.

The prolonged search forced Odyssey of the Seas to alter its itinerary for the final leg of its seven-night Greek Isles cruise. The captain announced that the scheduled stop in Naples, Italy, was cancelled so the ship could assist with the rescue operation before resuming its journey toward its homeport of Civitavecchia.

While many passengers understood the necessary disruption to their travel plans, some expressed disappointment over missing the final port call, particularly a planned visit to Pompeii. The vessel proceeded directly toward Rome's port ahead of its scheduled debarkation, as local authorities continued investigating the exact circumstances surrounding how the passenger entered the water.
